What is Cloud Storage?

Cloud Storage is a service in which data (files, photos, documents) is stored on remote servers connected to the internet, instead of on the user's own computer's hard disk. These servers are managed by a company (such as Google, Microsoft), and the user can access their data from anywhere, from any device, through the internet.

This is fundamentally different from local storage media such as a hard disk, pen drive or CD-ROM — accessing local storage does not require the internet, whereas an internet connection is essential to store or access data on cloud storage online — this is a point asked about repeatedly in exams.

Exams often give a list and ask which option is 'not' a cloud storage service — watch out for made-up names; the four services given above are the real and most popular ones.

Benefits of Cloud Storage

The main benefits of cloud storage are — Accessibility (from any device, from any location), Automatic backup (data stays safe even if a device breaks down), Easy sharing (sharing a file with others by sending its link), and Collaboration (several people working on the same document at once, as in Google Docs).

Memory Trick / Exam Tip

Memory trick: think of cloud storage as 'your cupboard kept on the internet' — you always need the key of the internet to open (access) that cupboard, otherwise the data cannot be reached. By contrast, a pen drive or hard disk is your own cupboard at home, which can be opened even without the internet.
