Modals
प्रमुख modals हैं: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must, ought to; need, dare और used to को semi-modals कहा जाता है।
मुख्य नियम: (1) modal के बाद क्रिया का पहला रूप (V1) आता है — He can swim, He can swims नहीं। (2) तीसरे पुरुष एकवचन में भी modal के साथ -s नहीं लगता — She must go। (3) ought to और used to में 'to' आता है, बाकी modals के बाद 'to' नहीं आता — You must to go गलत है। (4) दो modals एक साथ नहीं आते — will can गलत है, इसके स्थान पर will be able to लिखते हैं। (6) प्रश्न और नकारात्मक वाक्य बनाने के लिए do/does/did नहीं लगता — Can you help? / You must not smoke।
Must का कोई अलग past रूप नहीं है; भूतकाल की बाध्यता के लिए had to आता है — I had to walk home। इसी तरह can की भविष्य क्षमता के लिए will/shall be able to प्रयोग होता है, जैसे: I don't think I shall be able to go there।
| Modal |
|---|---|---|
| can | क्षमता (ability), अनौपचारिक अनुमति | She can speak three languages. / You can go now. |
| could | भूतकाल की क्षमता, विनम्र अनुरोध, कम संभावना | He could not catch the thief. / Could you open the window? |
| may | औपचारिक अनुमति, संभावना, शुभकामना (wish) | May I come in, sir? / It may rain today. / May you live long! |
| might | कम संभावना, may का past रूप (reported speech में) | He might come, but I am not sure. |
| shall | I/We के साथ भविष्य; You/He/They के साथ आदेश, वचन, धमकी | We shall overcome. / You shall be punished for this. (threat) |
| should | सलाह (advice), कर्तव्य | You should see a doctor. / We should respect elders. |
| will | You/He/They के साथ भविष्य; I/We के साथ दृढ़ निश्चय, वचन | I will help you. (promise) |
| would | विनम्र अनुरोध, भूतकाल की आदत, इच्छा | Would you help me? / He would walk every morning. |
| must | बाध्यता/अनिवार्यता (obligation), दृढ़ अनुमान | Staff must be at their desks by 9:00 am. / He must be tired. |
| ought to | नैतिक कर्तव्य (moral obligation) | You ought to pay your debts. / We ought to help the poor. |
| need | आवश्यकता — modal रूप में प्रायः नकारात्मक/प्रश्न में | You need not worry. / Need I go? |
| dare | साहस करना — modal रूप में प्रायः नकारात्मक/प्रश्न में | How dare you speak like that? / He dare not oppose. |
| used to | भूतकाल की आदत जो अब नहीं है | I used to play cricket in my childhood. |
|---|---|---|
| must vs should | must = अनिवार्य नियम/बाध्यता; should = सलाह, न मानने पर दंड नहीं | You must wear a helmet (नियम). You should eat fruits (सलाह). |
| should vs ought to | दोनों कर्तव्य बताते हैं; ought to नैतिक/सामाजिक दायित्व पर अधिक ज़ोर देता है | You ought to obey your parents. |
| can vs may | can = क्षमता; may = औपचारिक अनुमति या संभावना | I can lift this box. / May I use your pen? |
| may vs might | might में संभावना may से कम मानी जाती है | It may rain. / It might rain (कम संभावना). |
| must not vs need not | must not = मनाही (prohibition); need not = ज़रूरत नहीं, पर करने से मना भी नहीं | You must not park here. / You need not come tomorrow. |
| can vs could | could = can का past (क्षमता) या अधिक विनम्र अनुरोध | When I was five, I could swim. / Could I leave early? |
(The road is wet; it must have rained)। should have / ought to have + V3 = जो कर्तव्य पूरा नहीं हुआ, उस पर पछतावा या आलोचना (You should have told me earlier)। may have / might have + V3 = भूतकाल की संभावना (He may have missed the bus)। (You could have won the match)।
भाव-सूत्र याद रखें: 'नियम = must, नैतिकता = ought to, सलाह = should, अनुमति = may, क्षमता = can (past में could), धमकी/आदेश (You/He के साथ) = shall।'
Modals
मुख्य modals हैं can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must और ought to। need, dare और used to को semi-modals कहा जाता है।
(Staff must be at their desks by 9 am), जबकि should केवल सलाह या कर्तव्य बताता है (You should exercise daily)।
You ought to pay your debts.
