मूल नियम: कर्ता का वचन ही क्रिया तय करता है

Subject–Verb Agreement का अर्थ है कि वाक्य की क्रिया (verb) अपने कर्ता (subject) के वचन (number: singular/plural) और पुरुष (person: first/second/third) के अनुसार हो। Simple present tense में third person singular कर्ता (he, she, it, Ram, the boy) के साथ क्रिया में -s/-es लगता है: She writes. The boy plays. Plural कर्ता के साथ क्रिया का मूल रूप आता है: They write. The parents fulfil the needs of their children.

सहायक क्रियाओं में: singular के साथ is/was/has/does, plural के साथ are/were/have/do। 'I' के साथ am/was/have और 'you' के साथ हमेशा are/were/have आते हैं — 'You is' कभी नहीं। Modals (can, may, must, will, should) कर्ता के वचन से नहीं बदलते: He can, They can।

सबसे आम गलती बीच में आए शब्दों से होती है। क्रिया कर्ता के मुख्य शब्द (head noun) से मिलती है, उसके बाद आए of-phrase या prepositional phrase से नहीं: The box of pencils is on the table. One of my friends lives in Ajmer. The quality of the mangoes was poor.

जुड़े हुए कर्ता (Compound Subjects) के नियम

स्थितिनियमउदाहरण
A and Bदो या अधिक कर्ता 'and' से जुड़ें तो plural verbSmoke, foul water, dirty air and litter pollute our environment.
एक ही व्यक्ति/वस्तु के दो नामArticle केवल पहले शब्द से पहले हो (एक ही व्यक्ति), या दोनों शब्द मिलकर एक इकाई (जैसे एक भोजन) का नाम हों तो singularThe poet and singer is here. Bread and butter is my breakfast.
Each/Every … and …'each' या 'every' से शुरू होने पर singularEvery boy and girl is present.
A as well as / along with / together with / with / besides / in addition to Bक्रिया पहले कर्ता (A) के अनुसारA correct policy as well as schemes is required. The teacher, with her students, is going on a trip.
A and not B / not B but Aक्रिया उस कर्ता के अनुसार जो 'not' वाला नहीं हैHeroism, and not sacrifice, is rare. Not the pupils but the teacher is to blame.
A or B / either A or B / neither A nor B / not only A but also Bक्रिया पास वाले (दूसरे) कर्ता के अनुसार — Principle of proximityEither Ravi or his friends are coming. Neither the students nor the teacher was late. Not only the girls but also the boy has won.

याद रखें: 'and' जोड़ता है (plural); 'as well as' केवल साथ जोड़ता है, कर्ता पहला ही रहता है; 'or/nor' में पास वाला जीतता है।

There, Relative Pronoun और Percentage वाले वाक्य

'There is/There are' में असली कर्ता क्रिया के बाद आता है, इसलिए क्रिया उसी के अनुसार होती है: There is a pen on the desk. There are two pens on the desk.

Relative pronoun (who, which, that) की क्रिया उसके antecedent — यानी जिस संज्ञा के लिए वह आया है — के अनुसार होती है: It is the imposed decision of the parents that is responsible… (that = decision, singular)। He is one of those boys who are always punctual. (who = boys, plural)। It is I who am responsible.

Percentage, fraction, part, half, all, some, most के साथ क्रिया of के बाद वाली संज्ञा से तय होती है: Half of the water is dirty. Half of the students are absent. Most of the work is done. Most of the books are old.

परीक्षा टिप

रिक्त स्थान से पहले 'असली कर्ता' को घेरें: of-phrase, as well as/with वाले हिस्से और 'not' वाले हिस्से पर पेंसिल से कट लगाएँ, जो बचे वही कर्ता है। फिर 'or/nor' हो तो पास वाला कर्ता देखें। 30 सेकंड का यह तरीका परीक्षा के लगभग हर agreement प्रश्न को हल कर देता है।

अक्सर पूछे जाने वाले प्रश्न

'as well as' वाले वाक्य में क्रिया किसके अनुसार होती है?+

पहले कर्ता के अनुसार। जैसे: A correct policy as well as schemes is required. The boys as well as the teacher are here.

'Either…or' और 'Neither…nor' के साथ singular verb लगेगी या plural?+

क्रिया पास वाले, यानी दूसरे कर्ता के अनुसार: Neither the teacher nor the students were late. Either the students or the teacher is responsible.

'A number of' और 'The number of' में क्या अंतर है?+

'A number of' का अर्थ 'कई' है, इसलिए plural verb (A number of students are absent)। 'The number of' का अर्थ 'संख्या' है, इसलिए singular verb (The number of students is 40)।

'Every boy and girl' के साथ is आएगा या are?+

'is'। 'each' या 'every' से शुरू होने वाले जुड़े कर्ता को एक-एक करके देखा जाता है, इसलिए singular verb आती है।
