One Word Substitution — व्यक्ति, स्थान और समूह
One Word Substitution यानी पूरे वाक्यांश के बदले एक शब्द। परीक्षा में सबसे ज़्यादा प्रश्न व्यक्ति, स्थान और समूह — इन्हीं तीन श्रेणियों से आते हैं, इसलिए ये 105 शब्द पहले याद करने चाहिए।
One-Word Substitution (एक शब्द वाले प्रतिस्थापन)
इस प्रकार के प्रश्न में एक पूरा वाक्यांश दिया जाता है और पूछा जाता है कि उसके लिए एक शब्द क्या होगा। यह हिस्सा रटने का कम और पहचानने का अधिक है, क्योंकि अंग्रेज़ी के अधिकांश ऐसे शब्द ग्रीक और लातीनी मूलों से बने हैं और मूल पहचान में आ जाए तो अर्थ अपने आप खुल जाता है। जैसे -cide का अर्थ है वध करना, इसलिए homicide, matricide, patricide और suicide सब एक ही परिवार के हैं। -phobia का अर्थ है डर, इसलिए hydrophobia पानी का डर है और acrophobia ऊँचाई का। -archy का अर्थ है शासन, इसलिए monarchy एक का शासन है और anarchy शासन का अभाव। इसी तरह -logy अध्ययन बताता है और -graphy लेखन या वर्णन। इन दस-बारह मूलों को पकड़ लेने से डेढ़ सौ शब्द अपने आप सधने लगते हैं।
नीचे ये शब्द विषय के अनुसार बाँटकर दिए गए हैं — पहले व्यक्ति बताने वाले, फिर स्थान, फिर समूह, फिर डर, फिर शासन-व्यवस्था, फिर विज्ञान और अध्ययन, और अंत में ध्वनियाँ तथा कुछ मिश्रित शब्द। विषय के अनुसार याद करने का लाभ यह है कि परीक्षा में एक शब्द याद आते ही उसके साथ वाले शब्द भी खिंचकर याद आ जाते हैं।
व्यक्ति बताने वाले शब्द
व्यक्ति बताने वाले शब्द इस पूरे हिस्से में सबसे अधिक पूछे जाते हैं, और इनमें भी एक व्यवस्था छिपी है। जो शब्द किसी काम या कला से जुड़े हैं वे प्रायः -ist या -ian पर समाप्त होते हैं — numismatist, philatelist, historian, physician। जो शब्द किसी मान्यता या विचार से जुड़े हैं वे भी -ist लेते हैं — atheist, optimist, pessimist। और omni- से शुरू होने वाले शब्दों में ‘सब’ का भाव रहता है, इसलिए omnipresent सर्वव्यापी है, omniscient सर्वज्ञ और omnipotent सर्वशक्तिमान। इस एक उपसर्ग को पकड़ लेने पर तीनों शब्द एक साथ याद रह जाते हैं।

स्थान बताने वाले शब्द
स्थान बताने वाले शब्दों में -ary और -ery का अंत बार-बार दिखता है, और प्रायः वह किसी चीज के रखे जाने या बनाए जाने की जगह बताता है। apiary में मधुमक्खियाँ रहती हैं, aviary में पक्षी, granary में अनाज और bakery में रोटी सेंकी जाती है। इनके साथ एक सावधानी रखिए — कुछ शब्द देखने में मिलते-जुलते हैं पर अर्थ दूर हैं, जैसे cemetery कब्रिस्तान है और mortuary वह स्थान है जहाँ अंतिम संस्कार से पहले शव रखा जाता है। परीक्षा इन्हीं दो को एक साथ विकल्पों में रखती है।
