Synonym यानी वह शब्द जिसका अर्थ दिए गए शब्द के सबसे पास बैठता हो। परीक्षा में अकसर दो विकल्प पास-पास के होते हैं, इसलिए शब्द का सटीक अर्थ जानना ज़रूरी है। यहाँ 127 शब्द हिंदी अर्थ सहित वर्णक्रम में दिए गए हैं।
Synonyms (पर्यायवाची शब्द)
पर्यायवाची का अर्थ है वे शब्द जिनका अर्थ लगभग एक जैसा हो। ध्यान दीजिए, ‘लगभग’ शब्द जानबूझकर रखा गया है — अंग्रेज़ी में दो शब्द पूरी तरह एक जैसे कभी नहीं होते, उनमें कहीं न कहीं तीव्रता या प्रयोग का अंतर रह ही जाता है। इसलिए प्रश्न भी ‘most similar in meaning’ पूछता है, ‘same in meaning’ नहीं। हल करने का व्यावहारिक तरीक़ा यह है कि पहले दिए गए शब्द का अपना हिंदी अर्थ मन में तय कीजिए, फिर चारों विकल्पों के हिंदी अर्थ मन में लाइए, और फिर देखिए कि कौन-सा विकल्प उसी भाव के सबसे पास बैठता है। यदि दो विकल्प पास लगें तो यह देखिए कि कौन-सा विकल्प उसी तीव्रता का है — जैसे angry और furious दोनों क्रोध बताते हैं, पर furious कहीं अधिक तीव्र है।

तीव्रता देखिए और प्रयोग का क्षेत्र देखिए। big और enormous दोनों बड़ा बताते हैं, पर enormous असाधारण रूप से बड़ा है। sad और dismal दोनों उदास हैं, पर dismal में निराशा भी घुली है। famous और infamous में तो दिशा ही उलटी है — एक प्रसिद्धि है और दूसरी बदनामी। इसलिए पर्यायवाची याद करते समय शब्द के साथ उसका भाव भी याद कीजिए, केवल हिंदी अर्थ नहीं।
