Phrasal verb एक क्रिया और उसके साथ जुड़े adverb या preposition (particle) से बनता है — look + into = look into (जाँच करना)। Particle बदलते ही अर्थ बदल जाता है: look after (देखभाल करना), look for (खोजना), look up to (सम्मान करना)। कई phrasal verbs के दो-तीन अर्थ होते हैं, इसलिए वाक्य का संदर्भ ज़रूर देखें।

Phrase (वाक्यांश) व्याकरण में शब्दों का वह समूह है जिसमें कर्ता-क्रिया वाला पूरा उपवाक्य नहीं होता। 'Idioms and phrases' शीर्षक में 'phrase' से आशय प्रायः ऐसे मुहावरेदार वाक्यांशों से होता है, जैसे 'in the nick of time' या 'by leaps and bounds'।

परीक्षा में अर्थ कैसे पहचानें

पहला नियम — शाब्दिक (literal) अर्थ वाले विकल्प को सबसे पहले संदेह से देखें। 'Blowing his own trumpet' के लिए 'Playing his trumpet' जैसा विकल्प लगभग हमेशा जाल होता है, क्योंकि idiom का अर्थ आलंकारिक (figurative) होता है।

दूसरा नियम — idiom को वाक्य में रखकर पढ़ें। यदि वाक्य में नकारात्मक भाव है (No one believed his …) तो अर्थ भी नकारात्मक होगा (unreal story), सकारात्मक नहीं (a real story)। Phrasal verb प्रश्न में कर्ता और कर्म का संबंध देखें: अधिकारी और रहस्य → जाँच (look into); डाकू और निहत्थे यात्री → हमला (set upon); नेता और विरोध → दबाना (bear down)।

तीसरा नियम — जहाँ संभव हो, हिंदी मुहावरे से तुलना करें, पर शब्दशः अनुवाद न करें। 'Take to one's heels' ≈ नौ दो ग्यारह होना; 'blow one's own trumpet' ≈ अपने मुँह मियाँ मिट्ठू बनना; 'an apple of discord' ≈ झगड़े की जड़।

याद रखने की ट्रिक

Phrasal verbs को particle के भाव से जोड़ें: 'into' = भीतर तक (look into = गहराई से जाँचना), 'upon' = ऊपर टूट पड़ना (set upon = हमला), 'down' = नीचे दबाना (bear down = विरोध दबाना), 'out' = बाहर/पूरा (carry out, bear out = सच बाहर लाना, पुष्टि)। यह हर शब्द पर लागू नहीं होता, पर परीक्षा के ज़्यादातर विकल्पों में सही उत्तर तक पहुँचा देता है।
