Exam weight (our count from the real 2018-2024 papers)

Vivekananda is not named in any question. The nearest are 2018 Part C Q12 (10 marks: "Teachings of leaders and reformers never grow old...") and 2023 Part C Q11 (10 marks: "Discuss the role of administration in bringing about 'social reform'"). So this page is mainly a bank of examples for the 10-mark "teachings of leaders and reformers" question. This is our own count, not RPSC information.

30-second summary

Remember

  • Swami Vivekananda (12 January 1863 to 4 July 1902) was a disciple of Ramakrishna Paramahamsa; at the 1893 Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago his speech began "Sisters and brothers of America"; on 1 May 1897 he founded the Ramakrishna Mission.
  • Practical Vedanta: the Advaita teaching that one Reality is in all beings, so serving beings is worshipping God.
  • Ethics of service: see God in the poor, the weak and the sick; education that is "man-making", that builds character.
  • Strength and fearlessness: "Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached."
  • For administrators: a spirit of service, reaching the poor, a stress on character and education. Limit: his idiom is religious and Vedantic; in a plural state, put it in constitutional language (dignity, equality).

Remember

  • Ready line 1: Practical Vedanta: seeing one Reality in all and turning that vision into acts of service. (15 words)
  • Ready line 2: Vivekananda: service done to the poor and sick, seeing God in them, is true worship. (15 words)
  • Ready line 3: For Vivekananda, education should build character, not merely load the mind with information. (13 words)

1. Key facts of his life

Narendranath Datta (Vivekananda) was born on 12 January 1863; his birthday is observed in India as National Youth Day (Wikipedia). In 1893, at the Parliament of the World's Religions in Chicago, his speech began "Sisters and brothers of America", and he spoke for religious tolerance and universal acceptance. On 1 May 1897 in Calcutta he founded the Ramakrishna Mission, an organisation for social service whose ideals rest on Karma Yoga (Wikipedia, "Swami Vivekananda").

2. Practical Vedanta

The core of Vedanta (Advaita) is that one Reality is in all beings. Vivekananda did not keep this to forest or cave; he insisted that it should come down into daily action and social service. This is what "Practical Vedanta" means. The Ramakrishna Mission's motto is Atmano mokshartham jagat hitaya cha, "for one's own liberation and for the good of the world" (this is the Mission's motto; it is described as a Rig Veda verse, but it is not confirmed by any verse number, so do not cite the Rig Veda as its source in an answer).

3. Service as worship

The text of the Complete Works says that the gist of all worship is "to be pure and to do good to others", and goes on: "He who sees Shiva in the poor, in the weak, and in the diseased, really worships Shiva; and if he sees Shiva only in the image, his worship is but preliminary." (Complete Works Vol. 3, Lectures from Colombo to Almora, "Address at the Rameswaram Temple on Real Worship", 1897; per the online text. Confirm the page number from the printed Advaita Ashrama edition before writing it.) In administration it means treating service delivery not as "clearing files" but as a moral duty to reach the poor.

4. Character building and education

In a letter written from Chicago to "Kidi" (Singaravelu Mudaliar), 3 March 1894 (Complete Works Vol. 4, "What We Believe In"): "Education is the manifestation of the perfection already in man." In his Madras lecture "The Future of India" (1897; Complete Works Vol. 3): "Education is not the amount of information that is put into your brain and runs riot there, undigested, all your life. We must have life-building, man-making, character-making assimilation of ideas." And in a letter from Chicago to the Maharaja of Mysore, 23 June 1894 (Complete Works Vol. 4, "Our Duty to the Masses"): "If the poor boy cannot come to education, education must go to him." In administration it means taking education to far-off children (mobile schools, transport, hostels).

5. Strength and fearlessness

In his reply to the Calcutta address (1897; Complete Works Vol. 3): "It is fear that is the greatest of all superstitions. It is fear that is the cause of our woes, and it is fearlessness that brings heaven even in a moment. Therefore, 'Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached.'" The line is inspired by Katha Upanishad 1.3.14, "uttishthata jagrata prapya varan nibodhata". The Upanishad line means roughly "arise, awake, approach the great and learn", so the English sentence is not a word-for-word translation. In administration it means moral courage and perseverance.

6. Summary for administration

Vivekananda's ideaUse today (our interpretation)
Service as worshipA service spirit; reaching the last person in the queue
Character buildingValues and character in education; integrity in officers
Fearlessness and strengthThe right decision even under pressure
Education should reach the poorTaking services to weak and distant children
Practical VedantaPutting values into action, not only preaching

Limit: Vivekananda's language is religious and Vedantic. In a multi-faith, secular state an officer should say the same spirit in constitutional words: dignity, equality and the duty to serve.

The Ramakrishna Mission (1897) and famine relief

On 1 May 1897 Vivekananda founded the Ramakrishna Mission. That same year Swami Akhandananda began famine relief at Sargachi (West Bengal) (Wikipedia, "Ramakrishna Mission"). The Mission was registered in 1909 under Act XXI of 1860 (Wikipedia). Today it runs medical, relief and educational programmes. Use: "Vivekananda's service ethic became an institution: the Ramakrishna Mission."

Chicago, 1893

The speech at the Parliament of the World's Religions, which began "Sisters and brothers of America...", carried a message of religious tolerance and universal acceptance (Wikipedia). Use: "India's tradition of tolerance and dialogue, presented on a world stage."

    At the bottom

How the concept was asked before: Vivekananda has not been named in any question, but "teachings of leaders and reformers" came in 2018 at 10 marks and "social reform" in 2023 at 10 marks. So keep two or three sourced Vivekananda lines ready for every long answer.

Common mistakes

Remember

  • Writing Vivekananda only as a "religious saint". His stress on service, education and character building was social too.
  • Calling "Arise, awake, and stop not till the goal is reached" a translation of the Katha Upanishad. The line is inspired by Katha 1.3.14 but is not word for word, and a source such as the 1897 Calcutta reply is better to cite.
  • Writing popular lines heard second-hand (such as the well-known "Daridra Narayana" phrase) without a source. Put only sourced lines into quotations.

  • Give the meaning of Practical Vedanta in one sentence.
  • In the "service as worship" passage, in whom is Shiva to be seen?
  • State two lines of Vivekananda on education.
  • How will you use a Vivekananda example in the 2018 10-mark question?
