How REET asks this topic
REET 2024 asked which current is found in the Pacific Ocean — the options included the Alaska, Gulf Stream, Labrador and Benguela currents, and the correct answer was the 'Alaska current'. This makes clear that the exam expects you to correctly match every major ocean current to its ocean and its warm/cold nature — this topic is based on REET's official syllabus (World Geography: Climate and Vegetation).
Koppen classification — the world's major climate groups
| Group | Name | Key feature |
|---|---|---|
| A | Tropical | Near the equator (roughly between 15°N and 15°S); high temperatures year-round, no sharp change of seasons |
| B | Arid / Semi-arid (Dry) | Covers roughly a quarter of the earth's land area; very little rainfall, high evaporation |
| C | Temperate | Mid-latitudes (roughly 25°–70°); influenced by the westerlies, with a clear change of seasons |
| D | Continental | Mid to high latitudes; extreme seasonal contrast (bitterly cold winters and hot summers) |
| E | Polar | Above 60°N/S; very low temperatures and rainfall |
Major ocean currents
| Current | Ocean | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Alaska Current | North Pacific Ocean | Warm |
| Gulf Stream | North Atlantic Ocean | Warm |
| Labrador Current | North Atlantic Ocean | Cold |
| Benguela Current | South Atlantic Ocean (south-west coast of Africa) | Cold |
| Kuroshio Current | North Pacific Ocean (near Japan) | Warm |
| California Current | North Pacific Ocean (west coast of the US) | Cold |
Simple rule of thumb: in the Northern Hemisphere, warm currents are usually found off a continent's eastern coast, and cold currents off its western coast.
How ocean currents shape climate
Warm currents (such as the Gulf Stream) raise the temperature of the coastal regions they touch — this is a major reason Western Europe's climate is far warmer and wetter than its latitude alone would suggest. Cold currents (such as the Benguela or Labrador currents), by contrast, make coastal areas cooler and drier — the Benguela Current off Namibia is a key reason the Namib Desert formed there.
The direction a current flows in is decided by the earth's rotation (the Coriolis force), by winds, and by the shape of the continents — currents generally circulate clockwise in the Northern Hemisphere and anticlockwise in the Southern Hemisphere.
The main factors that shape climate
The climate of any place is mainly decided by five factors — latitude (its distance from the equator, which decides how much solar radiation it receives), altitude (the higher above sea level a place is, the lower its temperature tends to be), distance from the sea (coastal areas see smaller swings in temperature than continental interiors), wind direction (moist winds bring rain, dry winds dry things out), and ocean currents (warm currents warm coasts, cold currents cool and dry them).
Together, these factors combine to create the world's varied climate belts — deserts (such as the Sahara and the Thar), Mediterranean climates (such as southern Europe), monsoon climates (such as South Asia), and the tundra. For REET, it matters to understand that latitude alone doesn't decide climate — ocean currents and terrain play a large role too.
Beyond Koppen: another classification worth knowing
Besides Koppen, another well-known method of classifying climate in geography is the 'Thornthwaite classification', which sorts climates by the balance between rainfall and evaporation (a moisture index). At REET level, though, it's the Koppen classification and ocean currents that come up most often, so they deserve your main focus — simply recognising Thornthwaite's name is enough.
India's climate under the Koppen classification
The Koppen classification applies within India too — most of the peninsular part of the country has a tropical savanna climate (Aw), the arid tracts of western Rajasthan and Kutch fall under the hot desert climate (BWh), while the Himalayan region falls under the mountain/alpine climate (E). This shows that the very climate groups you study at the world level (A, B, C, D, E) show up across different regions within India as well — which is why it pays to study Climate Zones together with India's Climate and Vegetation for REET.
How to teach this to children
Classroom activity
Have children mark warm currents in red and cold currents in blue on a world map — this builds visual memory and helps them identify currents correctly in the exam.
Teaching aid (demonstration)
Place two containers of warm and cold water side by side and show children how a temperature difference sets air or water in motion — this gives a general sense of how currents and winds originate.
Common misconception
Students often assume that every current near the equator must be warm — clarify that whether a current is warm or cold depends on its direction (moving from pole toward equator, or the reverse) and which side of a continent it runs along (east or west coast), not on latitude alone.
Assessment idea
Give a short worksheet matching 'current–ocean–type', exactly the way REET tends to ask this.
Memory trick / exam tip
'Alaska and Kuroshio = warm currents of the Pacific; Gulf Stream = warm current of the Atlantic; Labrador and Benguela = cold currents of the Atlantic' — remember currents in ocean-and-type pairs, since memorising names alone leads to confusion.

- Aउत्तरी प्रशांत महासागर
- Bदक्षिणी अटलांटिक महासागर
- Cहिंद महासागर
- Dआर्कटिक महासागर
Explanation

Explanation
The cold Benguela Current cools and dries the air along Africa's south-west coast, causing very little rainfall there — this is considered a major reason the Namib Desert formed.
Frequently asked questions
How many REET questions come from Climate Zones?+
REET 2024 had 1 question from this topic; climate and ocean currents are asked regularly in the World Geography section.
How many major groups does the Koppen climate classification have?+
The Koppen classification has 5 major groups — A (Tropical), B (Arid/Dry), C (Temperate), D (Continental) and E (Polar).
Where is the Gulf Stream located?+
The Gulf Stream is a warm current that flows in the North Atlantic Ocean, moving from North America toward Europe.
What is the difference between a warm current and a cold current?+
Warm currents generally flow from the equator toward the poles and warm the coasts they touch (such as the Gulf Stream); cold currents flow from the poles toward the equator and cool the coasts they touch (such as the Labrador and Benguela currents).
What are the main factors that affect climate?+
Latitude, altitude, distance from the sea, wind direction, and ocean currents — these five factors together decide the climate of a place.
Is there another well-known method of classifying climate besides Koppen?+
Yes, the Thornthwaite classification is another well-known method, based on the balance between rainfall and evaporation (the moisture index); but for REET, the Koppen classification is what matters more.
Under the Koppen classification, which group does western Rajasthan fall into?+
The arid region of western Rajasthan and Kutch falls under 'BWh' (hot desert climate) in the Koppen classification, which is a subtype of Group B (arid climate).
Where is an equatorial climate found?+
An equatorial climate is found near the equator (such as the Amazon basin, the Congo basin, Indonesia), with high temperatures and heavy rainfall year-round and no dry season — it is a subtype (Af) of Koppen's Group A.
Why are seasons opposite in the Northern and Southern Hemispheres?+
Because the earth's axis is tilted and it revolves around the sun, when the Northern Hemisphere is tilted toward the sun it experiences summer while the Southern Hemisphere experiences winter, and this situation reverses six months later — which is why the seasons of the two hemispheres are always opposite.
