How REET asks this topic

REET 2024 asked about the two main types of rubrics (holistic and analytic), the three interlinked components of the evaluation process (objectives, learning experiences, evaluation), and the Holistic Progress Card developed under NCERT's 'PARAKH' initiative — showing that the exam links traditional evaluation theory with recent policy initiatives as well. Candidates should note that this mixes long-standing theoretical categories, such as the purposes of evaluation and the two rubric types, with a current policy development, PARAKH, so revision needs to cover both together.

Types of Evaluation

Evaluation in education mainly serves three purposes — diagnostic, formative (continuous), and summative. Diagnostic evaluation is carried out before or during teaching to identify a student's specific difficulties and weaknesses, so that appropriate remedial teaching can be given. In other words, diagnostic evaluation looks at the gaps that already exist in a student's understanding, either before a new topic begins or partway through it, so remedial teaching can be aimed precisely at those specific difficulties. Formative evaluation happens continuously during the teaching process and gives both students and teachers immediate feedback and a chance to improve, while summative evaluation measures overall achievement at the end of a unit or session — the first two act while teaching is still under way, and the third looks back once it is complete.

According to Bloom, the evaluation process is tripolar (triangular), with three interlinked components — educational objectives, learning experiences, and evaluation. Objectives determine what experiences students should be given, and evaluation checks how far the set objectives were achieved — the three are linked to each other, not separate. Because of this link, the design of a test or a rubric only makes sense in view of the objectives that were originally set and the learning experiences that were actually given in the classroom.

Objective and Essay Tests: Strengths and Weaknesses

Test typeMain strengthMain weakness
Objective testHigh reliability and validity, wide coverage of content, no examiner effect on scoringLimited assessment of original thinking and expression, guessing effect
Essay testFree expression of ideas, assesses original thinkingLower reliability and validity, limited content representation, subjectivity in scoring

Features of Good Evaluation

Validity
The test measures what it was intended to measure, so the result reflects the objective being assessed and not something else.
Reliability
Repeated use gives consistent results, meaning the same test under similar conditions should not swing widely from one attempt to the next.
Continuity
Evaluation is not a one-time event but an ongoing process.
Objectivity and comprehensiveness
Scoring is free of personal bias and covers the entire content, so no part of the syllabus is left out.

Rubrics and New Policy Initiatives

Rubrics (assessment-criteria tables) come in two main types — holistic rubrics, where the entire piece of work is given one overall level or score, and analytic rubrics, where each criterion (such as language, factual accuracy, presentation) is scored separately. Analytic rubrics are considered more useful for evaluating project work and map work in Social Studies, since they tell the student exactly which points to improve — because each criterion is scored on its own, a student can see, for instance, whether it is factual accuracy or presentation that needs more work, rather than being left with one combined score.

In line with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, NCERT has set up a national assessment centre called 'PARAKH', which has developed a Holistic Progress Card for the Foundational Stage. Rather than just marks, this card records a child's multi-dimensional development — cognitive, social-emotional, physical and creative — through descriptive feedback, not just subject knowledge. This is a deliberate shift away from summarising a child's year in a set of subject marks alone.

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE)

After the Right to Education Act, 2009, school education adopted the concept of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE). Here, 'continuous' means evaluation happens at regular intervals throughout the year, not just as a single exam at year-end; and 'comprehensive' means evaluation isn't limited to the scholastic side alone but also covers co-scholastic aspects — such as life skills, attitudes, sports, and co-curricular activities.

When applying CCE in Social Studies, teachers use a variety of tools — map work, projects, group discussions, and oral presentations — so that alongside knowledge, a student's social understanding, cooperation, and expression skills are also assessed. This eases the pressure of a purely memory-based traditional exam system and makes learning more well-rounded. Using several different tools rather than one written test also gives a student who may not do well in a single timed exam a fair chance to show what they have understood through a project or a discussion instead.

Portfolio assessment (a collected record of a student's work over time) and peer assessment are also considered useful in Social Studies — a portfolio shows a student's progress over time, while peer assessment builds critical thinking and self-assessment skills among students. A good question paper also balances different levels of Bloom's taxonomy — knowledge, understanding, application and analysis — so that fact-recall questions alone don't dominate. A portfolio built up over weeks or months lets a teacher see a student's growth across several pieces of work rather than judging them on a single test.

Self-assessment is another important tool, in which a student reviews their own work against a set checklist of criteria. This builds a sense of accountability and self-reliance in students, and also lets the teacher see how deeply a student understands their own learning process — this is considered an extended form of formative evaluation.

Overall, the goal of evaluation in Social Studies is not just to award marks, but to check how well a student can connect concepts from history, geography, civics and economics to real life. So a good teacher uses diagnostic, formative, and summative evaluation — all three — at the right time, for the right purpose, rather than relying on just one exam at year-end. Used this way, diagnostic evaluation at the start locates the gaps, formative evaluation during teaching keeps closing them, and summative evaluation at the end confirms how much was finally achieved.

Using This in the Classroom

SituationSuitable evaluation tool
Checking students' prior knowledge before starting a lessonDiagnostic test / oral questioning
Checking understanding during the lessonFormative evaluation — classroom questions, quick quizzes
Measuring achievement at the end of a unit/sessionSummative test
Evaluating map work or a projectAnalytic rubric (scoring on separate criteria)
Evaluating an overall oral presentationHolistic rubric
Assessing co-scholastic aspects (life skills, cooperation)Observation-based checklist (co-scholastic category under CCE)

Trick to remember

'Diagnosis first, remedy after' — diagnostic testing always comes before remedial teaching. Remember rubrics: 'holistic = one score for everything, analytic = a separate score for each criterion'. To remember the three types of evaluation, remember the sequence — 'first diagnose (before the lesson), then form (during the lesson), finally sum up (after the lesson)' — that's the natural order of diagnostic, formative and summative evaluation, and it matches how a teacher would naturally use each one in the classroom.

REET 2024 Questions (with solutions)

Question 108

What are the two major types of rubrics ?

Explanation

Question 132

What are the three mutually interrelated aspects of the evaluation process ?

Explanation

Question 129

How much domain of assessment and evaluation is included in Holistic progress card for foundational stage by PARAKH (NCERT) ?

  1. Aतीन
  2. Bचार
  3. Cपाँच
  4. Dछ:

Explanation
