स्थान के Prepositions

वही तीन शब्द — at, on, in — स्थान में भी चलते हैं, पर तर्क अलग है: at एक बिंदु, on एक सतह, in एक घेरा। दोनों प्रयोगों का अंतर यहाँ एक तालिका में आमने-सामने रखा गया है।

स्थान के Prepositions — at, on, in और उनके साथी

स्थान बताने में भी वही तीन preposition सबसे आगे हैं, और यहाँ भी बँटवारा आकार पर टिका है। at एक बिंदु के लिए, on एक सतह के लिए, in एक घिरे हुए स्थान के लिए। छोटी जगह, पता, या ऐसी जगह जहाँ आप किसी काम के लिए जाते हैं — वहाँ at आता है: at the bus stand, at the gate, at 12 Station Road, at school, at the wedding। किसी सतह पर कुछ रखा या टिका हो तो on: on the table, on the wall, on the roof, on page ten। और किसी सीमा के भीतर हो तो in: in the room, in Rajasthan, in the box, in the water। शहर, राज्य और देश हमेशा in लेते हैं — in Jaipur, in Rajasthan, in India — पर जब शहर को यात्रा का एक पड़ाव-बिंदु माना जाए तो at भी चलता है, जैसे ‘The train stops at Kota’।

इसी क्रम में कुछ और prepositions आते हैं जो स्थिति को और बारीकी से बताते हैं। above और over दोनों ‘ऊपर’ हैं, पर above केवल ऊँचाई बताता है और over सीधे ऊपर, ढकते हुए या पार करते हुए का भाव देता है — ‘The fan is above my head’ और ‘He spread a sheet over the bed’। इसी तरह below और under का जोड़ा है — below केवल नीचे का स्तर बताता है, under सीधे नीचे या किसी चीज के ढके होने का भाव देता है। between दो के बीच आता है और among तीन या अधिक के बीच — ‘between you and me’ पर ‘among the students’। beside का अर्थ है बगल में और besides का अर्थ है इसके अतिरिक्त; एक अक्षर का यह फ़र्क़ परीक्षा का पसंदीदा जाल है।
