How REET asks about this topic
REET 2024 (Level 2), across its two shifts, carried 7 questions from this period. The pattern is clear: (1) an inscription and its author — who wrote the Prayag Prashasti (Harishena); (2) author–work matching — Dandin, Vishakhadatta, Kalidasa; (3) Gupta-era temples — statement-based questions on the Dashavatara Temple at Devgarh and its sculptures (Gajendra Moksha, Nara-Narayana); (4) marriage alliances — Prabhavati Gupta's marriage to the Vakataka king Rudrasena II; (5) ancient India's contact with Southeast Asia — Java's old name, Yavadvipa. There was also one question on a Chola-era text. So along with straight recall, keep the 'who is linked to whom' lists rock-solid, and for statement-based questions, hold on to the exact facts.
Gupta rulers at a glance
| Ruler | Key facts (exam angle) |
|---|---|
| Srigupta | Regarded as the dynasty's founder; held the title 'Maharaja'. |
| Ghatotkacha | Successor to Srigupta; also held the title 'Maharaja'. |
| Chandragupta I | The dynasty's first powerful ruler; took the grander title 'Maharajadhiraja'; married the Lichchhavi princess Kumaradevi; the Gupta era (319–320 CE) is dated from his reign. |
| Samudragupta | Court poet Harishena composed the Prayag Prashasti; conquered the kings of north India, defeated southern kings but restored their kingdoms; coins show him playing the veena; historian V.A. Smith called him the 'Napoleon of India'. |
| Chandragupta II (Vikramaditya) | Defeated the Shakas and conquered western India; his daughter Prabhavati Gupta married the Vakataka king Rudrasena II; the Chinese traveller Faxian (Fa-Hien) visited India during his reign; the 'Chandra' of the Delhi Mehrauli Iron Pillar is identified with him. |
| Kumaragupta I | Reigned roughly 415–455 CE; Xuanzang names the founder of Nalanda Mahavihara as 'Shakraditya', whom scholars identify with Kumaragupta I. |
| Skandagupta | Faced the Hun invasions (Bhitari pillar inscription); per the Junagadh inscription, the Sudarshan Lake was repaired by Chakrapalita, son of governor Parnadatta. |
The Gupta rulers' sequence and their inscriptions are asked again and again in REET.[Source 2]
The Prayag Prashasti and Samudragupta's conquest policy
The Prayag Prashasti (the Allahabad Pillar Inscription) is written in Sanskrit and engraved on the very pillar that already carries an edict of Ashoka. It was composed by Harishena, Samudragupta's court poet and a senior official. NCERT's Class 6 history textbook uses this very prashasti to explain that a 'prashasti' means a eulogy — so it praises the king, and historians read it with that caution in mind.
According to the prashasti, Samudragupta followed four distinct policies: (1) he defeated the kings of Aryavarta (north India) and absorbed their kingdoms directly into his empire; (2) he defeated the kings of Dakshinapatha (the south) but restored their kingdoms to them; (3) frontier kingdoms — Samatata and Kamarupa in the east, Nepal in the north, and the ganas (republics) in the west — accepted his overlordship by paying tribute, obeying his orders and attending his court; (4) distant rulers — descendants of the Shaka-Kushanas and the king of Sri Lanka — acknowledged him by sending gifts and offering marriage alliances. Among the western ganas named are the Malavas, Arjunayanas, Yaudheyas, Madrakas and Abhiras — and ganas such as the Malavas and Arjunayanas are linked to regions of present-day Rajasthan.
Gupta-era literature, science and the author–work list
| Scholar / Author | Major work(s) / contribution |
|---|---|
| Kalidasa | Abhijnanashakuntalam, Meghadutam, Raghuvamsham, Kumarasambhavam, Malavikagnimitram, Vikramorvashiyam |
| Vishakhadatta | Mudrarakshasa, Devichandraguptam |
| Shudraka | Mrichchhakatikam |
| Amarasimha | Amarakosha (a Sanskrit thesaurus) |
| Aryabhata | Aryabhatiya (499 CE) — explained the earth's rotation on its axis and gave a scientific explanation of eclipses |
| Varahamihira | Panchasiddhantika, Brihatsamhita |
| Harishena | Prayag Prashasti |
| Dandin | Dashakumaracharita — Dandin belongs to the post-Gupta period (roughly the 7th century); in REET 2024 this appeared as a correct author–work pair |
| Buddhadatta | Abhidhammavatara (a Pali Buddhist text) — pairing it with Siddhasena is a wrong pairing |
This list is the most useful one for matching-type questions.
Administration, economy, art and temple architecture
Gupta rulers carried grand titles such as 'Maharajadhiraja' and 'Paramabhattaraka'. The empire was divided into provinces (bhukti) and districts (vishaya). The practice of granting land (agrahara) to Brahmins and religious institutions grew, and evidence of this survives on copper plates. The Guptas issued large numbers of gold coins, called 'dinaras'.
The Gupta period is regarded as the starting point of Indian temple architecture. The Dashavatara Temple at Devgarh (Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh) stands on a raised platform (jagati) and is considered an early example of a shikhara (spire) temple; its walls carry panels of Gajendra Moksha, the penance of Nara-Narayana, and Sheshashayi Vishnu. Also from this period are the brick temple at Bhitargaon (Kanpur), the Shiva temple at Bhumara, the Parvati temple at Nachna-Kuthar, and the Vishnu temple at Tigawa.
During this period India's trade and cultural contact with Southeast Asia grew. Ancient Indian literature called Java 'Yavadvipa' and the prosperous regions of Southeast Asia 'Suvarnadvipa'.
Rajasthan connection

- Rulers in the Bayana Hoard
- Coins of Chandragupta I, Samudragupta, Chandragupta II, Kumaragupta I and Skandagupta.[Source 3]
- Western ganas (republics)
- The Prayag Prashasti names the Malava, Arjunayana, Yaudheya and other ganas who acknowledged Samudragupta's overlordship.[Source 4]
How to teach this to children
Classroom activity (Class 6–7)
'Read the inscription, build the history': give children a simplified English passage of the Prayag Prashasti and ask groups — what does it tell us about the king, and what might it leave out? This builds critical thinking about sources.
Teaching aids
An outline map of India with Aryavarta, Dakshinapatha and the frontier ganas marked in different colours; flashcards of coin images and the Devgarh temple; a dynasty family-tree chart.
Common misconceptions
(1) Children confuse Chandragupta of the Mauryas with Chandragupta of the Guptas — the two are separated by nearly six centuries. (2) Treating a 'prashasti' as unbiased history. (3) Assuming 'golden age' means every social class prospered equally.
Assessment idea
An author–work matching game, plus an open question: 'If you were Harishena, which achievement of Samudragupta would you have praised in the prashasti, and why?' — this tests both recall and analysis.
Memory trick / exam tip
Remember the order of rulers: 'Sri–Ghato–Chandra–Samudra–Chandra–Kumara–Skanda'. And the pairs: Samudra → Harishena (Prayag), Chandra II → Faxian + Prabhavati (Vakataka), Kumara → Nalanda, Skanda → Huns + Sudarshan Lake. In statement-based questions, slow down on words like 'first' and 'only' and verify the fact carefully.
