How REET asks this topic
REET 2024 tested four angles on this topic — the true objective of remedial teaching (never to isolate or expose weak children), its strategies (peer support, reward schemes and feedback, all used together), the benefits of online remedial teaching, and the fact that it is always grounded in a diagnostic process. The exam is really checking whether you can tell the objective apart from the strategy.
What is Remedial Teaching?
Remedial Teaching is special-purpose teaching given to students who are not reaching the expected level through normal classroom instruction. Its goal is to identify and remove their specific difficulties — not to separate them from the class or expose their weakness.
Remedial teaching is always built on diagnostic testing — first the child's specific difficulty (pronunciation, sentence structure, vocabulary, and so on) is identified, and only then is the remedy designed around it.
The remedial teaching cycle
| Stage | What happens |
|---|---|
| 1. Diagnostic testing | Finding the child's specific difficulties and their causes |
| 2. Error analysis | Identifying patterns in the mistakes (grammar, pronunciation, etc.) |
| 3. Remedial teaching | Giving targeted practice and support in a simple-to-difficult order |
| 4. Re-evaluation | Re-testing to check whether the difficulty has actually improved |
This cycle shows that remedial teaching is never based on guesswork — it always starts from diagnosis.
Effective strategies
Remedial teaching draws on several strategies together — peer support, a reward scheme to encourage effort, and regular feedback to the student, the parent and the teacher alike. No single strategy on its own is considered sufficient.
Tasks are always sequenced from simple to difficult, and the focus stays on generic, foundational language skills (such as basic sentence structure) so the child can eventually learn independently.
Online remedial teaching
Online remedial teaching offers real advantages — children can learn at a flexible pace, time and place stop being obstacles, and a well-designed course makes finding information easy. It is also generally considered cost-effective, since it works out cheaper than repeated one-on-one in-person sessions.
Common remedial-teaching techniques
The Multisensory Approach (commonly abbreviated VAKT — Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic, Tactile) is considered one of the most effective remedial techniques — the child learns a word by seeing it (visual), saying and hearing it (auditory), writing it by hand (kinesthetic), and tracing it in sand or raised letters (tactile), all at once, which strengthens memory.
For pronunciation and spelling difficulties, phonics-based remediation works well — the child is taught to break a word down letter by letter and connect it to its sound, rather than simply memorising the whole word by rote.
Individualized attention and peer tutoring are also used together — practising in small groups at a child's own pace gives better results than moving the entire class forward at a single, uniform speed.
Common language difficulties and their remedies
| Difficulty | Remedial strategy |
|---|---|
| Pronunciation difficulty | Sound practice, teaching the difference using minimal pairs (e.g. ship/sheep) |
| Spelling difficulty | Multisensory (VAKT) and phonics-based practice |
| Sentence-structure difficulty | Sentence frames and scaffolding (completing half-built sentences) |
| Word-recognition/reading difficulty | Repeated practice with flashcards and sight words |
| Not speaking, out of hesitation | Low-stress speaking tasks |
The same remedy isn't given for every difficulty — the strategy is chosen based on the diagnosis.
The Diagnostic-cum-Remedial Teaching (DCRT) approach
In Indian teacher training, the widely used Diagnostic-cum-Remedial Teaching (DCRT) approach treats diagnosis not as a one-time test but as a continuous part of the teaching process itself — the teacher keeps identifying children's difficulties during regular classroom teaching and takes small corrective steps immediately, rather than waiting for a big test at the end of the term before starting any remedy.
In this approach, the teacher plays a dual role — both as the one who teaches and as the one who continuously diagnoses, so that no child's difficulty is left unnoticed for too long.
How remedial teaching is evaluated
A single big test is not considered enough to judge the success of remedial teaching — instead, continuous and formative assessment is used, such as short weekly quizzes, oral checks and portfolios (a collection of the child's work), to track gradual progress.
Evaluation also looks at whether the child has genuinely improved in real language use — speaking and writing in class — and not just on a test, because the ultimate goal of remedial teaching is not higher marks but enabling the child to use language independently.
How to teach children
Activity
Build a peer-buddy system in small groups for weaker children, where a faster learner helps out without making the child feel singled out.
Teaching material
Prepare worksheets graded from simple to difficult by level, so the child builds confidence through small, successful steps.
Common misconception
Remedial teaching is often mistaken for 'punishment' or 'separating weak children', when its actual purpose is supportive and positive.
Assessment
Measure progress with short diagnostic quizzes at regular intervals rather than relying only on a final exam.
Differentiated teaching
Every child's difficulty can be different (one weak in pronunciation, another in spelling), so teaching in small, targeted groups works better than one-size-fits-all remediation.
Peer learning
Pair faster learners as 'reading buddies' with weaker children for ten minutes of daily reading practice — it benefits both.
Memory trick / exam tip
Remember: 'Remedial Teaching = Diagnosis + Support' — diagnosis always comes first, support follows; remediation never starts directly. And whenever a question asks about the 'objective', avoid options like 'segregate/highlight weakness' — those aren't objectives, they're misconceptions.
REET 2024 questions (solved)
Question 83Multiple answers accepted
The following is not an objective of remedial teaching.
- Ato segregate the students
- Bto prepare suitable assignments including easy to difficult tasks
- Cto prepare items to test the learning that should take place
- Dto highlight the weaknesses of the students
Explanation
Question 86
The remedial teaching strategies include
- APeer support programme
- BReward scheme
- CFeed back to the students, parents and teachers
- DAll the three
Explanation
उपचारात्मक शिक्षण में सहपाठी सहायता (peer support), पुरस्कार योजना द्वारा प्रोत्साहन तथा विद्यार्थियों, अभिभावकों और शिक्षकों को फीडबैक — ये सभी रणनीतियाँ अपनाई जाती हैं। इसलिए ‘All the three’ सही है।
Question 90
Which one is not an advantage of Online Remedial Teaching ?
- AThe instruction pace is flexible as well as the class participation
- BIt is not cost effective
- CElimination of barriers of time and space
- DA well designed online course makes it easy for the students to navigate and search adequate informations
Explanation
ऑनलाइन उपचारात्मक शिक्षण के लाभ हैं – लचीली गति व भागीदारी, समय और स्थान की बाधाओं का समाप्त होना तथा अच्छी तरह डिज़ाइन किए गए कोर्स में जानकारी खोजना आसान होना। ऑनलाइन शिक्षण सामान्यतः कम खर्चीला (cost effective) माना जाता है, इसलिए 'It is not cost effective' लाभ नहीं है।
Question 81
‘Development of generic skills’ is one of the vital strategies of
- ATesting
- BEvaluation
- CAssessment
- DRemedial teaching
Explanation
उपचारात्मक शिक्षण (Remedial teaching) का उद्देश्य निदान के बाद कमज़ोरियों को दूर करना है; इसकी रणनीतियों में सामान्य/आधारभूत कौशलों (generic skills) का विकास शामिल है ताकि छात्र आगे स्वयं सीख सकें। Testing, Evaluation, Assessment कमियाँ पहचानने की प्रक्रियाएँ हैं, उन्हें दूर करने की रणनीति नहीं।
Practice questions
Question 1
What is the first step in the remedial teaching cycle?
- AGiving rewards
- BDiagnostic testing
- CSegregating weak students
- DFinal examination
Explanation
Remedial teaching always begins with diagnostic testing, since that's what reveals the cause of the difficulty.
Question 2
Which of the following is NOT a genuine objective of remedial teaching?
- ARemoving specific learning difficulties
- BBuilding confidence through small successes
- CSegregating slow learners permanently from the class
- DProviding tasks graded from simple to difficult
Explanation
Permanently separating slow learners from the class is not a goal of remedial teaching — its purpose is to support students, not isolate them.
Question 3
A teacher pairs a strong student with a weak student to help with English reading. This strategy is called:
- ADiagnostic testing
- BPeer support
- CSegregation
- DFinal evaluation
Explanation
Pairing a stronger student with a weaker one for help is called peer support.
Question 4
Which of these is an advantage of online remedial teaching?
- AIt removes time and place constraints
- BIt always requires a physical classroom
- CIt cannot be personalised
- DIt ignores student pace
Explanation
Online remedial teaching removes the barrier of time and place, letting children learn at their own convenience and pace.
Question 5
Remedial teaching tasks should generally be sequenced:
- AFrom difficult to simple
- BRandomly, without any order
- CFrom simple to difficult
- DAll tasks at the same difficulty
Explanation
In remedial teaching, tasks are sequenced from simple to difficult so the child can progress step by step with growing confidence.
Question 6
The process of identifying the specific cause of a student's learning difficulty is known as:
- ARemedial teaching
- BDiagnostic teaching
- CPeer teaching
- DProgrammed instruction
Explanation
The process of pinpointing the specific cause of a student's learning difficulty is called diagnostic teaching; the remedy is delivered afterwards through remedial teaching.
Question 7
Which of these is considered a good remedial strategy for a student struggling with English sentence structure?
- AGiving the same difficult worksheet as the rest of the class
- BFocusing on basic, generic sentence-building skills before moving to complex ones
- CIgnoring the difficulty and moving to the next chapter
- DPublicly comparing the student's marks with others
Explanation
Remedial teaching strengthens basic, generic skills first, so the child can go on to build more complex structures independently.
Question 8
Regular feedback to students, parents, and teachers during remedial teaching mainly helps to:
- APublicly shame the weak student
- BKeep all stakeholders informed of progress and adjust support accordingly
- CReplace diagnostic testing
- DEnd the remedial process early
Explanation
Feedback exists to keep the student, parent and teacher all informed of progress and to let support be adjusted as needed.
Question 9
Which statement about remedial teaching is TRUE?
- AIts basis is always the diagnostic process
- BIt involves only a final examination
- CChildren are permanently removed from class
- DIt is meant only for higher classes
Explanation
The basis of remedial teaching is always the diagnostic process — the difficulty is identified first, and the remedy follows.
Question 10
A school runs a low-cost online remedial English programme for slow learners. Which of the following is a realistic benefit of this approach?
- AChildren get no flexibility at all
- BTime and place constraints are reduced and children can learn at their own pace
- CIt is always more expensive than a traditional classroom
- DGiving feedback is not possible in this mode
Explanation
The main benefit of online remedial teaching is exactly this — time and place stop being constraints, and children can learn at their own pace.
