Methods of Teaching Hindi: Systems, Pioneers, Maxims of Teaching and Grammar Teaching — REET Notes
This page covers every major method and system used to teach Hindi (as mother tongue and as a second language) — their pioneers, the maxims of teaching, Herbart's five-step lesson system, and methods for teaching grammar — organised for the exam. REET 2024 asked 15 questions on this topic, making it one of the highest-scoring topics in the pedagogy portion of the language paper.

How REET tests this topic
REET 2024's 15 questions fall into three groups. (1) System-and-pioneer pairs — the book 'प्ले वे' / Play Way (Cook), Basic education (Gandhi), the age group for Montessori (3–6 years), an inconsistent statement about kindergarten, who expanded Herbart's four steps to five (Ziller), a statement about teaching reading (Rayburn), and emphasis on the cognitive dimension of language (Chomsky). (2) The basis of a method — the most natural method for the mother tongue (imitation), the core idea behind the correlation method, the basis of self-instructional booklets for a second language (grammar-translation), and the stages of micro-teaching. (3) Grammar teaching — inductive-deductive, and when grammar should begin (here the official key accepted both Grade 4 and Grade 6 as correct). The questions were direct, fact-based, and of the 'which statement is appropriate/inconsistent' style.
The maxims of teaching
Maxims of teaching describe the order in which a lesson should proceed. The most useful maxims for language teaching are: known to unknown, simple to complex, concrete to abstract, whole to part, specific to general, direct to indirect, analysis to synthesis, and induction to deduction.
REET often builds wrong options by reversing these maxims — 'अमूर्त से मूर्त' ("abstract to concrete"), 'जटिल से सरल' ("complex to simple"), 'खंड से पूर्ण' ("part to whole"). All three are wrong. In a language context, 'पूर्ण से अंश' ("whole to part") means the child recognises the complete sentence or word first, then the individual letters; and 'आगमन से निगमन' ("induction to deduction") means rules are drawn from examples first, and only then applied to new examples.
Major teaching systems and their pioneers
| System / method | Pioneer | Core basis | Remember this |
|---|---|---|---|
| Play Way method | Henry Caldwell Cook | Learning through play | Book 'द प्ले वे' / 'The Play Way' (1917) |
| Kindergarten | Friedrich Froebel | Self-activity, play, freedom, social cooperation | The child is the plant, the teacher the gardener; knowledge develops from inside out |
| Montessori method | Maria Montessori | Training the senses, freedom | Mainly for children aged 3–6; uses special teaching apparatus |
| Dalton plan | Helen Parkhurst | Individual work, assignments, self-paced learning | Subject laboratories replace the classroom |
| Basic education (Nai Talim / Wardha scheme) | Mahatma Gandhi | Education centred on a craft/handicraft | Presented at Wardha in 1937 |
| Project method | William H. Kilpatrick | Purposeful, real-life tasks | Based on John Dewey's pragmatism |
| Five-step (Panchpad) system | Herbart (4 steps) → Ziller (5 steps) | A structured lesson plan | Preparation, presentation, comparison/association, generalisation, application |
| Micro-teaching | Stanford University (Dwight Allen) | Small group, short time, one skill | Plan → teach → feedback → re-plan → re-teach → re-feedback |
'प्रवर्तक–प्रणाली' (pioneer–system) matching questions appear in REET every year — keep the whole table memorised.
Major methods of language teaching
| Method | How it's taught | Where it works / its limits |
|---|---|---|
| Imitation method | The teacher models correct pronunciation, reading or writing; children copy it | The most natural, most common method for teaching the mother tongue; used in the early grades |
| Direct method | The target language is linked directly to objects, pictures and actions; no use of the mother tongue or translation | Used for spoken proficiency in a second language; gives a weaker systematic grasp of grammar |
| Grammar-translation method | Rules are explained in the mother tongue and sentences are translated | Second-language self-instructional booklets are based on this; oral skill stays weak |
| Correlation method | Hindi is taught by linking it with history, geography, science and everyday life | Core idea: all knowledge is a single, unified whole |
| Storytelling / dramatisation | Telling a story, acting it out | Builds listening, speaking and vocabulary at the primary level |
| Question-answer / conversation method | Asking questions to encourage thinking and expression | Used at every level; keeps participation active |
| Language-association (भाषा-संसर्ग, bhasha-sansarg) method | Grammar rules are explained incidentally while teaching a lesson | Indirect grammar teaching, used in the early grades |
Methods of teaching grammar and early reading
There are two main methods of teaching grammar. In the deductive method, the rule or definition is given first, then examples — faster, but it encourages rote learning. In the inductive method, many examples are given first and children discover the rule themselves — psychologically sound and produces lasting learning. The most suitable sequence is "induction-deduction": draw out the rule from examples, and then apply it to new examples. The textbook method and the language-association (भाषा-संसर्ग) method are also common besides these.
There's no single agreed answer to when grammar should begin. In the early grades, grammar is taught indirectly, alongside language use, and formal grammar comes later. On this exact question, REET 2024's final key accepted both Grade 4 and Grade 6 as correct.
Methods of teaching early reading fall into two families. Synthetic (part to whole): the letter-recognition method, the phonic (sound-matching) method. Analytic (whole to part): the word method, the sentence method, the story method. Because of the "whole to part" maxim, analytic methods are considered more meaningful for children. W. M. Rayburn's well-known statement makes the same point — merely getting through the textbook is not the whole of teaching reading; the textbook is only its base or centre.

| Project | Grades 6–8 | Build a collection of 'हमारे गाँव की कहावतें' ("sayings from our village") — interviews, writing, editing, an exhibition |
Memory trick / exam tip
One sentence for the pioneers: 'कुक खेलता, फ्रोबेल बगीचे में, मॉण्टेसरी इंद्रियों से, पार्कहर्स्ट डाल्टन में, गांधी बेसिक में, किलपैट्रिक प्रोजेक्ट में' ("Cook plays, Froebel gardens, Montessori trains the senses, Parkhurst runs Dalton, Gandhi runs Basic, Kilpatrick runs Project"). And in a maxims-of-teaching question, immediately cross out any option that says to start from 'कठिन/अमूर्त/खंड' ("difficult/abstract/part").
Questions asked in REET 2024 (with solutions)
Question 40
The appropriate statement for 'language teaching' is
Explanation
Question 42
In the 'Montessori system', education through the senses is imparted to
- A3 से 6 वर्ष के बच्चों को
- B4 से 5 वर्ष के बच्चों को
- C4 से 7 वर्ष के बच्चों को
- D5 से 7 वर्ष के बच्चों को
Explanation
मारिया मॉण्टेसरी की प्रणाली मुख्यतः 3 से 6 वर्ष के बच्चों के लिए विकसित की गई थी, जिसमें विशेष शिक्षण-उपकरणों द्वारा ज्ञानेन्द्रियों के प्रशिक्षण के माध्यम से सीखने पर बल दिया जाता है। अतः सही उत्तर (A) है।
Question 49
For language teaching, the teacher should
- Aउच्चारण संबंधी त्रुटियों की अवहेलना नहीं करनी चाहिए
- Bविद्यार्थियों द्वारा किए गए अशुद्ध प्रयोग के उचित संशोधन की आवश्यकता नहीं है
- Cस्थानीय बोली के प्रभावों को दूर नहीं करना चाहिए
- Dवाक्य-रचना पर कोई ध्यान नहीं देना चाहिए
Explanation
Question 59
“We must remember that teaching the textbook alone is not reading instruction, although the textbook is certainly the basis or center.” The above statement is
- Aडब्ल्यू. एम. राइबर्न का
- Bमैंग्जिल का
- Cफ्रोबेल का
- Dरॉबर्ट फोस्टर का
Explanation
आधिकारिक उत्तर-कुंजी के अनुसार यह कथन डब्ल्यू. एम. राइबर्न (W. M. Ryburn) का है। कथन का आशय यह है कि पठन-शिक्षण का उद्देश्य केवल पाठ्य-पुस्तक पढ़ा देना नहीं, बल्कि पढ़ने का कौशल विकसित करना है; पाठ्य-पुस्तक उसका आधार या केन्द्र मात्र है।
Question 60
The four steps of the 'Herbart approach' were changed into the 'five-step system' (Panchapad Pranali) by
- Aमैंग्जिल के द्वारा
- Bजिलर के द्वारा
- Cब्लूम के द्वारा
- Dफ्रोबेल के द्वारा
Explanation
हरबर्ट ने शिक्षण के चार पद (स्पष्टता, सम्बद्धता, व्यवस्था, विधि) बताए थे। उनके अनुयायी जिलर (Ziller) ने ‘स्पष्टता’ को विभाजित कर इन्हें पाँच पदों में बदला, जो आगे चलकर हरबर्ट की पंचपद प्रणाली के रूप में प्रचलित हुई। अतः सही उत्तर (B) है।
Question 70
The most prevalent and appropriate method of mother-tongue teaching is -
- Aप्रयोगशाला विधि
- Bअनुकरण विधि
- Cव्याकरण विधि
- Dप्रोजेक्ट विधि
Explanation
बच्चा मातृभाषा सबसे पहले परिवार और परिवेश के लोगों का अनुकरण करके सीखता है। इसलिए विशेषकर प्रारंभिक स्तर पर मातृभाषा शिक्षण की सर्वाधिक प्रचलित एवं स्वाभाविक विधि अनुकरण विधि है। व्याकरण विधि प्रारंभिक स्तर पर नीरस मानी जाती है।
Question 85
Which language expert placed greater emphasis on cognitive strategies, word-meaning, and language-context aspects in the process of language learning?
- Aमैक्स वेबर
- Bजॉन पी. डिसको
- Cडेनियल डेविस
- Dचोमस्की
Explanation
Question 47
The 'correlation method' (सहसंबंध विधि) was developed on which basic concept?
- Aसम्पूर्ण ज्ञान पूर्ण इकाई है
- Bसीखने-सिखाने की क्रिया एक खेल है
- Cमातृभाषा को बच्चे स्वाभाविक रूप में सीखते हैं
- Dअनुकरण विधि का सिद्धान्त
Explanation
सहसंबंध (समवाय) विधि इस मूल अवधारणा पर आधारित है कि सम्पूर्ण ज्ञान एक पूर्ण इकाई है, इसलिए विभिन्न विषयों को आपस में जोड़कर पढ़ाया जाना चाहिए। खेल को सीखने का आधार मानना खेल विधि का, तथा स्वाभाविक रूप से सीखना प्रत्यक्ष/स्वाभाविक विधि का आधार है।
Question 54
What are the prevalent methods of teaching grammar?
- Aनिगमन प्रणाली
- Bआगमन प्रणाली
- Cदोनों में से कोई नहीं
- D(A) और (B) दोनों
Explanation
व्याकरण शिक्षण की प्रमुख प्रचलित विधियाँ निगमन प्रणाली (नियम से उदाहरण की ओर) और आगमन प्रणाली (उदाहरण से नियम की ओर) हैं। इसलिए (A) और (B) दोनों सही हैं।
Question 69
Feedback, re-planning, re-teaching and re-feedback — these are stages of which approach to teaching?
- Aरचना शिक्षण
- Bसूक्ष्म शिक्षण
- Cअनुवाद शिक्षण
- Dउच्चारण शिक्षण
Explanation
सूक्ष्म शिक्षण (Micro Teaching) चक्र के चरण हैं — योजना, शिक्षण, प्रतिपुष्टि, पुनः नियोजन, पुनः शिक्षण और पुनः प्रतिपुष्टि। इसमें छोटे समूह को थोड़े समय में एक शिक्षण कौशल का अभ्यास कराया जाता है।
Question 42
The author of the book 'प्ले वे' (Play Way) is
- Aडॉ. मॉण्टेसरी
- Bकुक महोदय
- Cप्लेटो
- Dफ्रोबेल
Explanation
‘द प्ले वे’ (The Play Way, 1917) पुस्तक के लेखक हेनरी काल्डवेल कुक (कुक महोदय) हैं, जिन्होंने खेल विधि को भाषा-शिक्षण में लोकप्रिय बनाया। फ्रोबेल किंडरगार्टन प्रणाली और मॉण्टेसरी मॉण्टेसरी पद्धति से जुड़े हैं।
Question 54Multiple answers accepted
From which class have most linguists considered it appropriate to begin the teaching of grammar?
- Aकक्षा 8 से
- Bकक्षा 6 से
- Cकक्षा 4 से
- Dकक्षा 7 से
Explanation
Question 62
Based on the Kindergarten system, which statement is inconsistent (incorrect)?
- Aयह प्रणाली स्वतंत्रता के सिद्धांत पर कार्य करती है ।
- Bयह प्रणाली ज्ञान को बाहर से अंदर देने के सिद्धांत पर कार्य करती है ।
- Cयह प्रणाली सामाजिक सहयोग के सिद्धांत पर कार्य करती है ।
- Dप्राथमिक स्तर के विध्यार्थियों के लिए अधिक उपयोगी है ।
Explanation
फ्रोबेल की किंडरगार्टन प्रणाली स्व-क्रिया, स्वतंत्रता, खेल और सामाजिक सहयोग के सिद्धांतों पर आधारित है और छोटे बच्चों के लिए उपयोगी है। फ्रोबेल के अनुसार ज्ञान बालक के भीतर से विकसित (अंदर से बाहर) होता है, इसलिए ‘ज्ञान को बाहर से अंदर देने’ वाला कथन असंगत है।
Question 67
The 'Basic Shiksha Pranali' (Basic Education System) is the contribution of
- Aपार्कहर्स्ट की
- Bफ्रोबेल की
- Cमहात्मा गाँधी की
- Dमारिया मॉण्टेसरी की
Explanation
बेसिक शिक्षा प्रणाली (वर्धा योजना / नई तालीम, 1937) महात्मा गाँधी की देन है, जिसमें हस्त-उद्योग को शिक्षा का केंद्र बनाया गया। पार्कहर्स्ट डाल्टन प्रणाली, फ्रोबेल किंडरगार्टन और मारिया मॉण्टेसरी मॉण्टेसरी पद्धति से जुड़ी हैं।
Question 75
The 'self-teaching series' (swayam shikshanmalayen) of second languages are based on
- Aसंघटनापरक विधि पर
- Bप्रत्यक्ष विधि पर
- Cव्याकरण एवं अनुवाद विधि पर
- Dखेल विधि पर
Explanation
Practice questions
Question 1
The 'Project Method' was propounded by —
- Aकिलपैट्रिक
- Bफ्रोबेल
- Cपार्कहर्स्ट
- Dमॉण्टेसरी
Explanation
The project method was put forward by William H. Kilpatrick, drawing on John Dewey's pragmatist ideas. Parkhurst is associated with the Dalton plan.
Question 2
The 'Dalton System' is associated with —
- Aहेनरी कुक
- Bमारिया मॉण्टेसरी
- Cहेलेन पार्कहर्स्ट
- Dहरबर्ट
Explanation
The Dalton plan is Helen Parkhurst's contribution, in which children learn individually and at their own pace based on assignment contracts.
Question 3
Which of the following maxims of teaching is correct?
- Aअज्ञात से ज्ञात की ओर
- Bमूर्त से अमूर्त की ओर
- Cअंश से पूर्ण की ओर
- Dसामान्य से विशिष्ट की ओर
Explanation
The correct maxims of teaching are known to unknown, whole to part, concrete to abstract, and specific to general. The other three options are all the reverse of these maxims.
Question 4
The method of teaching a second language in which the mother tongue and translation are not used at all —
- Aप्रत्यक्ष विधि
- Bव्याकरण-अनुवाद विधि
- Cभाषा-संसर्ग विधि
- Dपाठ्यपुस्तक विधि
Explanation
In the direct method, the target language is linked directly to objects, pictures and actions, and the mother tongue is not used at all.
Question 5
The correct order of Herbart's Five-Step (Panchpad) system is —
- Aतैयारी, प्रस्तुतीकरण, तुलना, सामान्यीकरण, प्रयोग
- Bप्रस्तुतीकरण, तैयारी, तुलना, प्रयोग, सामान्यीकरण
- Cतैयारी, तुलना, प्रस्तुतीकरण, प्रयोग, सामान्यीकरण
- Dसामान्यीकरण, तैयारी, प्रस्तुतीकरण, तुलना, प्रयोग
Explanation
The correct order of Herbart's five-step system is preparation, presentation, comparison/association, generalisation, and application.
Question 6
Teaching reading through the 'Sentence Method' and the 'Story Method' is based on which maxim of teaching?
- Aअंश से पूर्ण की ओर
- Bनिगमन से आगमन की ओर
- Cअमूर्त से मूर्त की ओर
- Dपूर्ण से अंश की ओर
Explanation
In these analytic methods, the child first sees or hears the whole sentence or story, and only then identifies words and letters — this is the "whole to part" maxim.
Question 7
The inconsistent (incorrect) statement about 'Microteaching' is —
- Aइसमें एक समय में एक शिक्षण-कौशल का अभ्यास होता है
- Bइसमें एक साथ सभी शिक्षण-कौशलों का पूरी कक्षा में अभ्यास होता है
- Cइसमें प्रतिपुष्टि के बाद पुनः शिक्षण होता है
- Dइसमें छात्र-समूह छोटा और समय कम होता है
Explanation
The defining feature of micro-teaching is exactly that a small group practises one teaching skill at a time, in a short session. Practising all skills together with the whole class at once is the opposite of that.
Question 8
While teaching noun (sangya) in Class 6, the teacher first writes several sentences and has children pick out the names of persons, places and things, and then has them form the definition of a noun. This method is —
- Aनिगमन विधि
- Bव्याकरण-अनुवाद विधि
- Cआगमन विधि
- Dअनुकरण विधि
Explanation
Starting from examples and having children draw out the rule or definition themselves is the inductive method. In the deductive method, the definition is given first, followed by examples.
Question 9
'Knowledge is a complete unit' — in a method based on this belief, what will the teacher do?
- Aहिंदी को अन्य विषयों से पूरी तरह अलग रखकर पढ़ाएगा
- Bहिंदी पाठ को पर्यावरण, इतिहास आदि विषयों और जीवन के अनुभवों से जोड़कर पढ़ाएगा
- Cकेवल व्याकरण के नियम रटवाएगा
- Dकेवल पाठ्यपुस्तक का सस्वर वाचन कराएगा
Explanation
This is the core idea of the correlation method, so the teacher would link the Hindi lesson to other subjects like EVS and history, and to life experiences. Teaching it in complete isolation would go against that.
Question 10
Due to the influence of the local dialect, a Class 2 child pronounces 'श' as 'स'. The most appropriate step for the teacher is —
- Aपूरी कक्षा के सामने उसे टोकना और हँसी उड़ाना
- Bत्रुटि की अवहेलना करना क्योंकि यह बोली का प्रभाव है
- Cउसे बोलने के अवसर देना बंद कर देना
- Dस्नेहपूर्वक शुद्ध उच्चारण का आदर्श प्रस्तुत कर अनुकरण और अभ्यास के अवसर देना
Explanation
Pronunciation errors shouldn't be ignored, but correction shouldn't be humiliating either. A teacher's own correct pronunciation, along with opportunities to imitate and practise, corrects the error while keeping the child's confidence intact.
Frequently asked questions
How many REET questions come from Hindi teaching methods?+
Roughly half of the questions in Language I and II come from pedagogy. REET 2024 asked 15 questions on this page's topic — teaching methods and systems.
What's the difference between the inductive and deductive methods?+
The inductive method moves from examples to a rule, while the deductive method gives the rule first and then examples. For grammar teaching, the combined "induction-deduction" order is considered most suitable.
What is the best method for teaching the mother tongue?+
At the early stage, the imitation method is the most natural and widely used, because a child learns the mother tongue simply by imitating the family and surroundings.
What is the key difference between the direct method and the grammar-translation method?+
The direct method doesn't use the mother tongue or translation at all — the target language is taught directly through objects and situations. The grammar-translation method teaches rules and translation through the mother tongue.
