How REET tests this topic

Four clear patterns showed up across REET 2024's 15 questions. (1) Whose definition is it — 'व्यवहार-परिवर्तन संबंधी प्रदत्तों का संकलन और व्याख्या' ("collecting and interpreting data on students' behaviour change", Quillen and Hanna), 'उद्देश्यों की प्राप्ति की सीमा का निर्णय' ("deciding the extent to which objectives have been achieved", Michaelis). (2) Classification and counts — the 3 types of tests by form, the 2 bases of classification, and Stanley and Ross's 4 steps for constructing an objective test. (3) Merits and drawbacks — a feature of good evaluation (discrimination), a true statement about objective questions, what essay questions are NOT good for, and what is NOT a merit of CCE (possibility of bias). (4) Application — essay tests for assessing thinking and expression, written tests for spelling, and what an achievement test's outline (blueprint) tells you. More than half of these were negatively framed ('नहीं है/असत्य है' — "is NOT/is FALSE") questions.

What evaluation is: going beyond measurement

Measurement is expressing some quality in numbers — for example, a child scoring 15 out of 20 in a dictation test. Evaluation is broader: it combines quantitative evidence (marks) with qualitative evidence (observation, interest, behaviour) to judge how far the objectives of teaching have been achieved. Hence the shorthand — मूल्यांकन = मापन + मूल्य-निर्णय (Evaluation = Measurement + Value-judgement).

Evaluation isn't the final step of teaching — it's an integral, continuous part of it. Teaching objectives, learning experiences and evaluation are all interlinked: objectives decide what is taught, and evaluation shows how far those objectives have actually been met. Its findings aren't only for the student — they give feedback to the teacher (how useful and where weak the method is), to parents, and to curriculum designers. These same findings are what drive diagnostic testing and remedial teaching.

Key definitions of evaluation

Scholar / bodyCore idea of the definition
Quillen and HannaEvaluation is the process of collecting and interpreting data (evidence) regarding change in students' behaviour in school
MichaelisEvaluation is the process of deciding the extent to which objectives have been achieved
Kothari Commission (1964–66)Evaluation is a continuous process and an integral part of the whole process of education

Identification cue: 'प्रदत्त/व्यवहार-परिवर्तन' ("data/behaviour change") = Quillen-Hanna; 'उद्देश्यों की प्राप्ति की सीमा' ("extent to which objectives are achieved") = Michaelis; 'सतत प्रक्रिया' ("continuous process") = Kothari Commission.

Features of good evaluation (a good test)

FeatureMeaningIts opposite (flaw)
ValidityMeasures exactly what it is meant to measure — a written dictation to test spellingInvalidity
ReliabilityGives roughly the same result on repeated useUnreliability
ObjectivityScores don't change with a change of examinerSubjectivity, bias
ComprehensivenessCovers the full content and all objectives/skillsNarrowness
DiscriminationCan distinguish between more and less able studentsEveryone scoring the same
UsabilityConvenient in terms of time, cost and administrationImpracticality

Types of tests and questions

BasisTypeUse in language teaching
Form of the testOral testPronunciation, loud reading, listening and conversation skills
Form of the testWritten testSpelling, handwriting, composition, grammar, comprehension
Form of the testPractical testDirect demonstration of a skill (acting, speech, a project)
Form of the questionsEssay-type (descriptive)Thinking, imagination, organisation, style and expressing feeling; drawback — covers less content, subjective marking
Form of the questionsShort-answer / very-short-answerA brief grasp of a concept; a balance between essay and objective
Form of the questionsObjective (true-false, MCQ, matching, fill-in-the-blank)More questions in less time, covers the full syllabus, a fixed answer key; drawback — can be guessed, doesn't test expression

Tests are classified on two main bases — the form of the test, and the form of the questions.

Achievement testing, the blueprint, and continuous & comprehensive evaluation

An achievement test checks what a student has learned from the content that was taught. Its main construction stages are: planning (deciding objectives, content, question types and weightage), drafting the preliminary form of the test, trying it out and reviewing it, and preparing the final form along with the answer key/marking scheme. According to REET 2024's official key, Stanley and Ross hold that constructing an objective test has four such stages.

The most important tool of the planning stage is the outline, or blueprint — a three-dimensional table that distributes marks by objective (knowledge, comprehension, application, skill), content (units) and question type (essay, short-answer, objective). A glance at the blueprint immediately tells you the marks split across content, how each objective is measured, and what percentage weight each objective carries.

Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) is provided for under the Right of Children to Free and Compulsory Education Act, 2009 (RTE). 'सतत' ("continuous") means ongoing formative evaluation through the session plus a summative evaluation at the end; 'व्यापक' ("comprehensive") means covering both scholastic (Hindi, maths, etc.) and co-scholastic (interest, behaviour, cooperation) areas. Merits — students stay engaged in study year-round, teachers give continuous guidance, parents get regular progress updates, and reliance on rote learning falls. Limits — the teacher's workload increases, and subjective assessment carries a risk of bias.

Using this in the classroom

Language skill / objectiveSuitable evaluation techniqueClassroom example
ListeningOral questions, following instructions after listeningTell a story, then ask — 'खरगोश क्यों हारा?' ("why did the rabbit lose?"); Grades 1–5
Speaking (pronunciation, expression)Oral test, observation, rating scaleA one-minute talk on 'मेरा प्रिय त्यौहार' ("my favourite festival"); a checklist for pronunciation, flow and confidence
Reading (fluency, comprehension)Loud-reading check, comprehension questions after silent readingAn unseen passage followed by a title and three questions; Grades 4–8
Writing (spelling, composition)Dictation, written test, essay-type questionsA 10-word dictation; letter or paragraph writing in Grades 6–8
Continuous progressPortfolio, anecdotal recordAdding one writing sample from the child to a file each month and tracking improvement
Identifying weaknessDiagnostic test → remedial teachingRepeated errors with the 'ि/ी' (i/ee) matras lead to practice with matched word pairs

Memory trick / exam tip

Two tricks help with 'नहीं है/असत्य है' ("is NOT/is FALSE") questions: (1) an option with an absolute word like 'केवल' (only), 'कभी नहीं' (never) or 'सभी' (all) is usually wrong (e.g. 'मूल्यांकन केवल विद्यार्थी के लिए पुनर्बलन है' — "evaluation is only reinforcement for the student"); (2) when asked what is NOT a merit ('गुण नहीं है'), look for the option that states a limitation/drawback (bias, cost in money and time, no opportunity for expression).

Questions asked in REET 2024 (with solutions)

Question 35

For objective tests, according to 'Stanley and Ross', how many steps are followed in test construction?

  1. Aपाँच सोपानों का
  2. Bचार सोपानों का
  3. Cतीन सोपानों का
  4. Dदो सोपानों का

Explanation

Question 44

From the 'blueprint of an achievement test' (upalabdhi parikshan ki ruprekha), what can be immediately determined?

  1. Aविषय-वस्तु का अंक विभाजन
  2. Bलक्ष्य-निर्धारण का मापन
  3. Cलक्ष्यों के महत्त्व का प्रतिशत
  4. Dउपर्युक्त सभी

Explanation

Question 66

A characteristic of good evaluation is -

  1. Aअविश्वसनीयता
  2. Bअवैधता
  3. Cसंकीर्णता
  4. Dविभेदीकरण

Explanation

अच्छे मूल्यांकन की विशेषताएँ हैं — विश्वसनीयता, वैधता, व्यापकता और विभेदीकरण (discrimination) की क्षमता, अर्थात् वह योग्य और कम योग्य विद्यार्थियों में अंतर कर सके। अविश्वसनीयता, अवैधता और संकीर्णता अच्छे मूल्यांकन के दोष हैं। अतः ‘विभेदीकरण’ सही उत्तर है।

Question 88

Which of the following is an UNTRUE statement regarding evaluation (मूल्यांकन)? -

Explanation

मूल्यांकन केवल विद्यार्थी के लिए ही नहीं, बल्कि शिक्षक, अभिभावक और पाठ्यक्रम-निर्माताओं के लिए भी प्रतिपुष्टि और पुनर्बलन का काम करता है। इसलिए ‘मूल्यांकन प्रक्रिया केवल विद्यार्थी के लिए पुनर्बलन का काम करती है’ असत्य कथन है। शेष तीनों कथन मूल्यांकन के सही कार्य बताते हैं।

Question 49

Based on their nature, how many types of examinations are there?

  1. Aएक
  2. Bदो
  3. Cतीन
  4. Dचार

Explanation

स्वरूप के आधार पर परीक्षाएँ तीन प्रकार की मानी जाती हैं — मौखिक परीक्षा, लिखित परीक्षा और प्रायोगिक परीक्षा। इसलिए सही उत्तर ‘तीन’ है।

Question 52

“The process of collecting data regarding the change in students' behaviour at school and interpreting it is called evaluation.” This definition was given by whom?

  1. Aक्वालेन तथा हन्ना
  2. Bली. जे. क्रॉनबैक
  3. Cस्टेलने तथा रॉस
  4. Dरवीन्द्र नाथ टैगोर

Explanation

Question 58

What are the main bases for classification of examinations?

  1. Aपरीक्षाओं का स्वरूप
  2. Bप्रश्नों का स्वरूप
  3. C(A) और (B) दोनों
  4. Dदोनों में से कोई नहीं

Explanation

परीक्षाओं का वर्गीकरण मुख्यतः दो आधारों पर किया जाता है — परीक्षाओं का स्वरूप (मौखिक, लिखित, प्रायोगिक) और प्रश्नों का स्वरूप (निबंधात्मक, लघूत्तरात्मक, वस्तुनिष्ठ)। इसलिए (A) और (B) दोनों सही है।

Question 73

Which of the following is NOT a step in the construction of an achievement test? -

  1. Aयोजना बनाना ।
  2. Bपरीक्षण के प्रारंभिक रूप की रचना करना ।
  3. Cपरीक्षण का पुनर्निरीक्षण करना ।
  4. Dसंप्रत्ययविस्थापित करना ।

Explanation

उपलब्धि परीक्षण के निर्माण के मुख्य चरण हैं — योजना बनाना, परीक्षण के प्रारंभिक रूप की रचना करना, परीक्षण का प्रशासन/पुनर्निरीक्षण करना और अंतिम रूप देना। ‘संप्रत्यय विस्थापित करना’ परीक्षण निर्माण का कोई चरण नहीं है।

Question 76

"मूल्यांकन, उद्देश्यों की प्राप्ति की सीमा का निर्णय करने की प्रक्रिया है।" (Evaluation is the process of determining the extent of attainment of objectives.) This statement is by-

  1. Aकोठारी आयोग का
  2. Bमाइकेलिस का
  3. Cसी. सी. रॉस का
  4. Dक्विलन एवं हैना का

Explanation

‘मूल्यांकन, उद्देश्यों की प्राप्ति की सीमा का निर्णय करने की प्रक्रिया है’ — यह परिभाषा माइकेलिस की मानी जाती है। इसमें मूल्यांकन को शैक्षिक उद्देश्यों की प्राप्ति से जोड़ा गया है। प्रदत्तों के संकलन व व्याख्या वाली परिभाषा क्विलन एवं हैना की है।

Question 88

The written examination suitable for effective evaluation of students' thinking and expression is-

  1. Aवस्तुनिष्ठ परीक्षा
  2. Bरिक्त-स्थान पूर्ति परीक्षा
  3. Cप्रायोगिक परीक्षा
  4. Dनिबंधात्मक परीक्षा

Explanation

निबंधात्मक परीक्षा में विद्यार्थी को विचारों को संगठित करके अपने शब्दों में विस्तार से लिखना होता है, इसलिए इससे चिंतन और अभिव्यक्ति का प्रभावी मूल्यांकन होता है। वस्तुनिष्ठ और रिक्त-स्थान पूर्ति परीक्षाएँ मुख्यतः तथ्यात्मक ज्ञान जाँचती हैं।

Question 41

Regarding 'objective questions' (vastunishtha prashn), which statement is true?

  1. Aइन्हें वर्णनात्मक प्रश्न कहा जाता है ।
  2. Bये प्रश्न पाठ्यविषय को अधिक से अधिक समावृत्त कर सकते हैं ।
  3. Cइन प्रश्नों के मूल्यांकन में शिक्षक को स्वतन्त्रता रहती है ।
  4. Dइन प्रश्नों के द्वारा कम समय में अधिक प्रश्नों के उत्तर नहीं दे सकते हैं ।

Explanation

Question 55

Regarding students who study only at exam time, the TRUE statement is

  1. Aउन्हें पाठ्यसामग्री का पूरा ज्ञान होता है ।
  2. Bउन्हें अपनी कमियों का निरंतर ज्ञान होता रहता है ।
  3. Cवे समझने की अपेक्षा रटने पर अधिक निर्भर रहते है ।
  4. Dमाता-पिता व अभिभावकों को उनकी प्रगति की निरंतर जानकारी रहती है ।

Explanation

जो छात्र केवल परीक्षा के समय पढ़ते हैं, उनके पास समय कम होता है, इसलिए वे विषय को समझने की बजाय रटने पर अधिक निर्भर रहते हैं। उन्हें न पाठ्यसामग्री का पूरा ज्ञान होता है, न अपनी कमियों का निरंतर पता चलता है। यही कारण है कि सतत मूल्यांकन पर बल दिया जाता है।

Question 68

Which is NOT a merit of essay-type questions?

  1. Aछात्रों को भाषा-शैली एवं लेखन कला का ज्ञान होता है ।
  2. Bबालकों की कल्पना शक्ति, स्मरण शक्ति, विश्लेषण एवं विचार-शक्ति का विकास होता है ।
  3. Cये प्रश्न रचनात्मक चिंतन को प्रोत्साहन देते है ।
  4. Dइनसे छात्रों को भावाभिव्यक्ति का अवसर नहीं मिलता है ।

Explanation

निबंधात्मक प्रश्नों में छात्र अपने शब्दों में विस्तार से उत्तर लिखते हैं, इसलिए उन्हें भावाभिव्यक्ति का पूरा अवसर मिलता है। भाषा-शैली, कल्पना, विश्लेषण और रचनात्मक चिंतन का विकास इनके गुण हैं। अतः ‘भावाभिव्यक्ति का अवसर नहीं मिलता’ कथन गुण नहीं है (और गलत भी है)।

Question 70

A written examination is useful for

  1. Aउच्चारण कौशल मापन में
  2. Bभाषायी व्यवहार मापन में
  3. Cश्रवण-कौशल मापन में
  4. Dवर्तनी की शुद्धता मापन में

Explanation

वर्तनी (spelling) की शुद्धता लिखकर ही जाँची जा सकती है, इसलिए इसके मापन में लिखित परीक्षा उपयोगी है। उच्चारण और श्रवण कौशल तथा भाषायी व्यवहार का मापन मौखिक परीक्षा या अवलोकन से बेहतर होता है।

Question 74

Which is NOT a quality of Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE)?

  1. Aछात्र वर्ष भर अध्ययनशील रहते हैं ।
  2. Bशिक्षक छात्रों को आवश्यक निर्देशन निरन्तर देते रहते हैं ।
  3. Cइस प्रणाली में पक्षपात की संभावना रहती है ।
  4. Dअभिभावक को बच्चों की प्रगति की निरन्तर जानकारी होती रहती है ।

Explanation

सतत एवं व्यापक मूल्यांकन (CCE) में छात्र वर्ष भर अध्ययनशील रहते हैं, शिक्षक निरंतर मार्गदर्शन देते हैं और अभिभावकों को प्रगति की लगातार जानकारी मिलती है— ये इसके गुण हैं। ‘पक्षपात की संभावना रहना’ इसकी एक सीमा/दोष है, गुण नहीं।

Practice questions

Question 1

'Evaluation = Measurement + ?' — the most suitable word for the blank is —

  1. Aअंक
  2. Bमूल्य-निर्णय
  3. Cपरीक्षा
  4. Dप्रश्न-पत्र

Explanation

Measurement only expresses something in numbers, while evaluation adds a value-judgement on top of those numbers and other evidence.

Question 2

A test that gives nearly the same results when used repeatedly has which quality?

  1. Aविश्वसनीयता
  2. Bवैधता
  3. Cव्यापकता
  4. Dविभेदीकरण

Explanation

Consistency (stability) of results is called reliability. Validity, in contrast, means a test measures exactly what it is built to measure.

Question 3

If a test designed to check handwriting (sulekh) contains only grammar questions, which quality is it lacking?

  1. Aविश्वसनीयता
  2. Bवस्तुनिष्ठता
  3. Cव्यावहारिकता
  4. Dवैधता

Explanation

A test that doesn't measure what it is meant to measure is invalid. Asking only grammar questions to assess handwriting is a lack of validity.

Question 4

'Evaluation is a continuous process and an integral part of the entire process of education' — this view is associated with —

  1. Aमुदालियर आयोग
  2. Bहंटर आयोग
  3. Cकोठारी आयोग
  4. Dसैडलर आयोग

Explanation

The Kothari Commission (1964–66) held evaluation to be a continuous process and an integral part of the whole of education. No other commission is linked to this particular definition.

Question 5

One limitation of objective-type questions is —

  1. Aइनसे विद्यार्थी की भावाभिव्यक्ति और लेखन-शैली की जाँच नहीं हो पाती
  2. Bपूरी विषयवस्तु समाहित हो सकती है
  3. Cकम समय में अधिक प्रश्न पूछे जा सकते हैं
  4. Dइनकी जाँच में वस्तुनिष्ठता रहती है

Explanation

Objective questions only require picking the right option, so a student's expression and writing style can't be assessed through them. The other three are all merits of objective questions.

Question 6

The three dimensions of the blueprint of an achievement test are —

  1. Aसमय, स्थान, कक्षा
  2. Bशिक्षक, छात्र, अभिभावक
  3. Cउद्देश्य, विषयवस्तु, प्रश्नों के प्रकार
  4. Dपाठ्यपुस्तक, श्यामपट, चार्ट

Explanation

The blueprint is a three-dimensional table that distributes marks according to objectives, content and question types.

Question 7

In Continuous and Comprehensive Evaluation, the word 'comprehensive' means —

  1. Aकेवल वर्ष के अंत में परीक्षा
  2. Bशैक्षिक और सह-शैक्षिक दोनों क्षेत्रों का मूल्यांकन
  3. Cकेवल लिखित परीक्षा
  4. Dकेवल हिंदी और गणित का मूल्यांकन

Explanation

"Comprehensive" means assessing both the scholastic (subject) and co-scholastic (behaviour, interest, cooperation, etc.) sides of a student. "Continuous" is what signals the ongoing, year-round nature of it.

Question 8

The most suitable way to assess Class 3 children's pronunciation and expressive (sasvar) reading skill is —

  1. Aमौखिक परीक्षा व अवलोकन जाँच-सूची
  2. Bबहुविकल्पी प्रश्न
  3. Cनिबंधात्मक परीक्षा
  4. Dश्रुतलेख

Explanation

Pronunciation and loud reading can only be demonstrated by speaking, so an oral test and an observation checklist are the right fit. Dictation tests spelling instead.

Question 9

In a unit test, the teacher noticed that most children are making mistakes with different forms of 'र' (as in प्र, र्म). After the evaluation, her most appropriate next step is —

  1. Aअगली इकाई शुरू कर देना
  2. Bनिदान के आधार पर उपचारात्मक शिक्षण और अभ्यास कराना
  3. Cगलती करने वाले बच्चों को कम अंक देकर आगे बढ़ना
  4. Dपरीक्षा दोबारा वैसी ही लेना

Explanation

The whole point of evaluation is to identify weaknesses and fix them. Diagnosis-based remedial teaching and practice is exactly the right use of the evaluation's findings.

Question 10

In which of the following situations will essay-type questions be most suitable?

  1. Aकम समय में पूरी पुस्तक के तथ्यों की जाँच
  2. Bसमानार्थी शब्दों का मिलान
  3. Cवर्तनी की त्वरित जाँच
  4. Dविद्यार्थी की विचार-संगठन और भावाभिव्यक्ति क्षमता की जाँच

Explanation

Essay-type questions require students to organise their thoughts and write in their own words, which makes them best suited for assessing thinking and the ability to express oneself.

Frequently asked questions

What's the difference between measurement and evaluation?+

Measurement expresses a quality in numbers and is purely quantitative. Evaluation adds qualitative evidence to measurement and delivers a value-judgement on how far objectives were achieved, making it much broader.

How many REET questions come from evaluation?+

The number varies by shift. REET 2024 asked 15 questions from evaluation within Hindi pedagogy, with definitions, types of tests and CCE the leading topics.

How many types of tests are there by form?+

Three — oral, written and practical. By form of questions, tests carry essay-type, short-answer and objective questions.

How should spelling and pronunciation be evaluated in language teaching?+

Spelling accuracy can only be checked through writing, so dictation or a written test is suitable. For pronunciation and listening skill, an oral test and observation work better.

What is NOT a merit of CCE?+

The possibility of bias is a limitation of CCE, not a merit. Year-round engagement in study, continuous teacher guidance and regular updates to parents are its genuine merits.
