How REET asks this topic

REET 2024 carried 5 kaal questions, and every single one gave a sentence and asked for its tense: 'आविष्कार किया' (simple past), 'बहती चली आ रही है' (present), 'रूप नहीं है' (simple present), 'शायद … हो सकेगा' (possible future), and 'निचुड़ चुका है' (past). In other words, REET's focus isn't on definitions — it's on identifying tense from the verb's final part (है, था, गा, होगा, हो) and signal words like 'शायद' and 'संभवतः'.

What is kaal?

The form of a verb that shows the time at which an action happens is called kaal (tense). There are three main types — present tense (the time going on right now: वह पढ़ता है), past tense (time that has already gone by: वह पढ़ चुका), and future tense (time yet to come: वह पढ़ेगा).

Tense is identified from the verb's final auxiliary form: 'है/हैं/हूँ' is usually present, 'था/थी/थे' is past, and 'गा/गी/गे' is future. But there's an important exception — 'खा चुका है', 'गया है', 'पढ़ लिया है' all contain 'है', yet the action is already complete, so these are actually near-past (आसन्न भूत) tense. REET 2024 treated 'सारा जीवन निचुड़ चुका है' as past tense on exactly this basis.

The six sub-types of past tense

Sub-typeHow to identify it (verb form)Example
Simple pastAction simply happened in the past; आ, ए, ई, याउसने पहिये का आविष्कार किया। राम गया।
Near-past (आसन्न भूत)Action just completed; …आ है / चुका हैमैंने खाना खा लिया है। जीवन निचुड़ चुका है।
Remote/complete past (पूर्ण भूत)Action was completed well before now; …आ था / चुका थावह पिछले वर्ष दिल्ली गया था।
Incomplete/continuous past (अपूर्ण भूत)Action was ongoing in the past; रहा था / ता थाबच्चे खेल रहे थे।
Doubtful past (संदिग्ध भूत)Doubt about whether a past action happened; …आ होगाउसने पत्र लिख दिया होगा।
Presumptive past (हेतुहेतुमद् भूत)One action depended on another that never happened; …ता, तो …तायदि तुम बुलाते तो मैं आता।

Some books also list a 'possible past' — 'शायद उसने पत्र लिखा हो' (…आ हो). Doubtful ends in 'होगा', possible ends in 'हो'.

Sub-types of present tense

Sub-typeHow to identify itExample
Simple presentA general statement true in the present; ता है / हैवह रोज़ पढ़ता है। उपभोक्तावादी संस्कृति सामंती संस्कृति का रूप नहीं है।
Continuous presentAction is happening right now; रहा हैसंस्कृति की धारा बहती चली आ रही है। माँ खाना बना रही है।
Doubtful presentDoubt about a present action; ता होगा / रहा होगापिताजी दफ़्तर जाते होंगे। वह पढ़ रहा होगा।
Possible presentPossibility in the present; ता हो / रहा होशायद वह आता हो। कहीं बच्चा सो रहा हो।

Don't jump to 'future' just because you spot 'होगा' — 'जाता होगा' and 'लिखा होगा' express a guess or doubt, so they are doubtful present and doubtful past respectively.

Sub-types of future tense

Sub-typeHow to identify itExample
Simple futureAction will happen at a future time; गा/गी/गेवह कल जयपुर जाएगा।
Possible futurePossibility of a future action; शायद, संभवतः, संभव है + ए/ऊँ or सकेगाशायद हमारा सुसंगत विकास हो सकेगा। संभव है वह कल आए।
Presumptive futureOne future action depends on another; यदि…तोयदि वह पढ़ेगा तो सफल होगा।

Some books call a polite command form ('आप कल अवश्य आइएगा') the imperative future. REET 2024's official key treated 'शायद … हो सकेगा' as possible future — 'शायद' is the signal of possibility.

Confusing pairs: quick identification

Simple past vs near-past: 'उसने खाना खाया' is simply a completed past action (simple past); 'उसने खाना खाया है' means the action just finished, with an effect reaching into the present (near-past). Near-past vs remote past: if it ends in 'है', it's near-past; if it ends in 'था', it's remote past. 'चुका है' is near-past, 'चुका था' is remote past.

Doubtful vs possible: doubtful expresses an assumption about something that probably happened but isn't certain — ending in 'होगा/होगी' (वह आया होगा); possible expresses only a possibility or wish — ending in 'हो/ए', usually alongside 'शायद', 'कहीं', 'संभव है' (शायद वह आया हो). Continuous present vs continuous past: 'रहा है' and 'रहा था' — just check the final auxiliary.

Tense stays the same even in a negative sentence: 'वह नहीं आता' is simple present, 'वह नहीं आया' is simple past. When 'है' itself is the main verb — 'भाषा संस्कृति का अंग है', 'यह रूप नहीं है' — the sentence is in simple present tense.

How to teach children

Activity: yesterday-today-tomorrow (Class 3–5)

Draw three boxes on the board — yesterday, today, tomorrow. Have children speak sentences about their own day — 'कल मैंने खीर खाई', 'आज मैं पढ़ रहा हूँ', 'कल मैं मेले जाऊँगा' — and write each one in the right box.

Activity: verb-ending strip (Class 6–8)

Take the sentence 'वह खेल' and swap the ending strip — ता है, रहा है, रहा था, चुका है, चुका था, होगा, हो. After each swap, children name the tense. This builds identification from the verb's ending rather than rote-memorised definitions.

Teaching materials

A timeline chart with the sub-types of past-present-future in different colours; have children pick sentences from a storybook and stick them on the correct point of the timeline.

Common misconception

Assuming 'है' automatically means present tense ('वह जा चुका है') and 'होगा' automatically means future ('वह गया होगा'). Fix: have children ask two questions for every sentence — 'is the action complete or not?' and 'is it certain, or a guess?'

Assessment idea

Give a short passage and have children rewrite it in all three tenses, plus identify tense and sub-type in 8 individual sentences.

Memory trick / exam tip

'Check the ending, check the signal': first look at the verb's final word (है/था/गा/होगा/हो), then look for a signal word (शायद, यदि…तो). Always remember two rules — 'चुका है / लिया है' = near-past, and 'शायद + हो/ए/सकेगा' = possible.

Questions asked in REET 2024 (solved)

Question 31

In the sentence 'काफी समय पश्चात् किसी ने पहिये का आविष्कार किया।' the tense is

  1. Aसंदिग्ध भूतकाल
  2. Bआसन्न भूतकाल
  3. Cसामान्य भूतकाल
  4. Dसंभाव्य भूतकाल

Explanation

Question 76

The tense used in the sentence "भारतीय संस्कृति की धारा निर्बाध रूप से हजारों वर्षों से बहती चली आ रही है।" is -

  1. Aभूतकाल
  2. Bभविष्यत्काल
  3. Cवर्तमानकाल
  4. Dआज्ञार्थ भविष्यत्काल

Explanation

Question 43

“Consumerist culture is not a form of feudal culture.” Which tense is in the above sentence?

  1. Aसामान्य वर्तमान काल
  2. Bसामान्य भूतकाल
  3. Cसंदिग्ध भूतकाल
  4. Dभविष्यत् काल

Explanation

Question 78

In the sentence “प्रकृति के साथ शायद हमारा सुसंगत विकास हो सकेगा।” (Perhaps our harmonious development with nature will be possible), the tense used is-

  1. Aसामान्य भविष्यत् काल
  2. Bसंभाव्य भविष्यत् काल
  3. Cआज्ञार्थ भविष्यत् काल
  4. Dसंदिग्ध भविष्यत् काल

Explanation

Question 48

In the sentence 'सारा जीवन निचुड़ चुका है।' the tense is

  1. Aवर्तमान काल
  2. Bभविष्य काल
  3. Cभूतकाल
  4. Dसंदिग्ध वर्तमान काल

Explanation

‘निचुड़ चुका है’ में ‘चुका है’ से पता चलता है कि कार्य अभी-अभी पूरा हो चुका है। यह आसन्न भूतकाल है, जो भूतकाल का ही एक भेद है। अतः वाक्य में भूतकाल है।
