इसे हिंदी में पढ़ें →

This page covers the definition and features of a muhavara (idiom), how it differs from a lokokti (proverb), and exam-ready idioms — organised by body parts and other themes — with meanings and sentence usage. REET 2024 carried 5 idiom questions, including one on a Rajasthani idiom.

How REET asks this topic

REET 2024 carried 5 idiom questions in two formats: (1) given the meaning, pick the idiom — 'being very clever' (उड़ती चिड़िया के पंख गिनना), 'gaining a true understanding of reality' (आँखें खुलना), 'one trouble on top of another' (कोढ़ में खाज होना); (2) given the idiom, pick the meaning — 'सोने में सुगंध होना' (an excess of good qualities) and the Rajasthani idiom 'अंग-अंग मुळकणौ' (being extremely delighted). The options often paired idioms sharing a single word (उड़ती, आँख), so knowing the exact meaning matters more than a general sense of the idiom.

What is a muhavara?

A muhavara is a phrase that sets aside the literal (अभिधा) meaning of its words and instead conveys a special, figurative meaning. The word 'मुहावरा' comes from Arabic. For example — 'आँखें खुलना' doesn't mean waking from sleep, but gaining a true understanding of reality; 'हाथ मलना' doesn't mean rubbing your palms together, but feeling regret.

Key features of a muhavara: (1) it's a phrase, not a complete sentence, so it's never used independently — it always appears embedded within a sentence; (2) when used in a sentence, its verb changes according to gender, number and tense — 'आँखें खुलना' becomes 'उसकी आँखें खुल गईं'; (3) its words cannot be swapped for synonyms — 'आँख का तारा' cannot become 'नेत्र का सितारा'; (4) its meaning is figurative, never literal.

Idioms bring conciseness, vividness and impact to language. Saying 'वह आठ-आठ आँसू रोया' conveys the feeling of deep grief more powerfully than 'वह बहुत दुखी होकर रोया'. That's why, in language teaching, idioms are taught with context and sentence usage — not as a list to be memorised.

Muhavara vs lokokti (proverb)

Muhavara (idiom)

FormA phrase (incomplete)

UsageNo independent use; becomes part of a sentence

Form changeIts verb changes with gender, number and tense

NatureFigurative, striking in its meaning

Exampleनौ दो ग्यारह होना → चोर पुलिस को देखकर नौ दो ग्यारह हो गया।

Lokokti (proverb)

FormA complete sentence

UsageCan be used independently

Form changeIts form usually stays unchanged

Exampleअब पछताए होत क्या, जब चिड़िया चुग गई खेत।

A simple test: a verb ending in 'ना' (होना, करना, लगना) appearing in the middle of a sentence usually marks a muhavara; a complete sentence on its own is a lokokti.

A method for solving idiom questions

Step one — place the idiom in a sentence and think it through: fitting 'कोढ़ में खाज' into a sentence like 'पहले से बीमार था, ऊपर से चोरी हो गई — यह तो कोढ़ में खाज हो गई' makes its meaning clear at once. Step two — look carefully at any option offering the literal, word-for-word meaning; an idiom's meaning is almost never literal.

Step three — distinguish between idioms that look alike but carry different feelings: 'आग में घी डालना' is about fuelling anger or a quarrel, while 'कोढ़ में खाज' is about one misfortune adding to another; 'आँखें खुलना' is about understanding the truth, while 'आँखें बंद करना' means ignoring something (or dying), and 'आँख लगना' means falling asleep. For Rajasthani idiom questions, focus on the standard-Hindi sense of the words — 'मुळकणौ' relates to smiling or being pleased, so 'अंग-अंग मुळकणौ' means being extremely delighted.

How to teach children

Activity: idiom mime (Class 4–8)

One child mimes the literal meaning of an idiom (say, हाथ मलना) while the class guesses; then the teacher asks for the real meaning. The gap between literal and figurative meaning becomes clear through play.

Activity: idioms in a story

Tell a short story containing 4–5 idioms; have children spot them and build their own sentences. Add local Rajasthani idioms and their Hindi equivalents too, so a child's home language is respected.

Teaching materials

Picture cards (a literal drawing of the idiom on one side, its meaning on the other), a body-part-based 'idiom body' chart, and a class 'idiom diary'.

Common misconception

Children write the literal meaning of an idiom ('नाक कटना' = getting hurt) or forget to change its verb ('उसकी आँखें खुलना गया'). Fix: have every idiom practised in at least two different tenses.

Assessment idea

Match meanings to idioms, fill in blanks, and have students write a short paragraph that meaningfully uses three given idioms — don't test only rote-memorised meanings.

Memory trick / exam tip

'Fit it in a sentence, and you'll get the meaning': before choosing an option, try saying the idiom in a short sentence in your head. And remember meaning-pairs to avoid mix-ups — आग में घी (anger grows), कोढ़ में खाज (misfortune grows), सोने में सुगंध (good qualities grow).
