Unseen Poem: How to Solve Questions on Bhav, Ras, Alankar and Language Style — REET Notes
This page gives you a complete method for reading an unseen poem extract and identifying its bhav (feeling), message, ras, alankar, kavya gun (poetic quality) and language style. REET 2024 asked 15 questions from this topic — one of the most heavily tested topics in the entire Hindi section — so preparation here converts directly into marks.

How REET tests this topic
REET 2024 asked 15 questions across three well-known poem extracts: Jaishankar Prasad's 'हिमाद्रि तुंग शृंग से' (Himadri tung shring se), Prasad's own 'बीती विभावरी जाग री' (Beeti vibhavari jaag ri), and an extract from Suryakant Tripathi 'Nirala's 'राम की शक्ति पूजा' (Ram ki Shakti Puja). The questions fell into four patterns — (1) bhav/message/life-value (patriotism, the call to awaken, Ram's very human side); (2) the meaning or fact behind a specific line (repentance, who broke the illusion, वाडवाग्नि / vaadvagni = the fire within the ocean); (3) alankar (rupak in 'सैन्य-सिंधु' / sainya-sindhu, anupras in 'खग-कुल कुल-कुल-सा' / khag-kul kul-kul-sa); and (4) language style (Sanskritised vocabulary, the source of the poem's musicality). 'असंगत कथन' ("which statement is inconsistent") questions also came up three times. In short: careful reading of the poem and a working vocabulary of poetics are both essential.
How to read the extract: bhav paksh and kala paksh
An unseen poem carries fewer words and more meaning than an unseen passage. The poet speaks through symbols, imagery and figures of speech, so on the first reading, just grasp 'कविता किसके बारे में है और किस मनोदशा में है' ("what is this poem about, and in what mood"). On the second reading, work out the meaning of difficult words from context, and on the third reading, hunt down the specific lines the questions ask about.
Every poem has two sides. Bhav paksh (the content/feeling side) — the poem's subject, feeling, message, ras, and life-values (patriotism, love of nature, the call to awaken). Kala paksh (the craft side) — language (tatsam/tadbhav/deshaj), shabd-shakti (word power), alankar, meter, rhythm, rhyme, musicality, and kavya gun. REET's questions come from exactly these two sides; if a question says 'भाव-सौंदर्य' (bhav-saundarya, beauty of feeling), look at bhav paksh; if it says 'शिल्प-सौंदर्य' (shilp-saundarya) or 'भाषा की विशेषता' (language feature), look at kala paksh.
One caution: don't take symbolic words literally. In 'अराति सैन्य-सिंधु में सुवाडवाग्नि से जलो' (arati sainya-sindhu mein suvaadvagni se jalo), the poet isn't talking about an actual ocean — the enemy army is being pictured as an ocean, and the call is for warriors to blaze within it like vaadvagni (वाडवाग्नि), the fire believed to burn within the sea. Likewise, 'आँखों में भरे विहाग' (aankhon mein bhare vihaag) — vihaag (विहाग) being a night-time raga — simply signals sleepy eyes, not a literal description of a midnight song.
REET 2024's three extracts at a glance
| Poem extract | Poet | Central bhav | Language / craft feature |
|---|---|---|---|
| हिमाद्रि तुंग शृंग से प्रबुद्ध शुद्ध भारती (Himadri tung shring se prabuddh shuddh Bharati) | Jaishankar Prasad (a song from the play 'चंद्रगुप्त' / Chandragupt) | Patriotism; a call to keep moving forward for freedom (veer ras) | Sanskrit-heavy vocabulary, oj gun, striking musicality from the repetition of 'बढ़े चलो, बढ़े चलो' (badhe chalo, badhe chalo) |
| बीती विभावरी जाग री (Beeti vibhavari jaag ri) | Jaishankar Prasad ('लहर' / Lahar collection) | Description of dawn, and urging a friend to wake up | Tatsam words (विभावरी, खग-कुल, किसलय, मलयज — vibhavari, khag-kul, kisalay, malayaj), madhurya gun, matching rhyme (नागरी–गागरी, जाग री–विहाग री / nagari–gagari, jaag ri–vihaag ri) |
| राम की शक्ति पूजा / Ram ki Shakti Puja (extract) | Suryakant Tripathi 'निराला' (Nirala) | Ram's self-reproach and repentance when his devotion is obstructed; Ram's human side | Predominantly tatsam, long compound words, a grave, weighty style |
Knowing the poet and central bhav of these famous poems in advance cuts your reading time for the extract in half.
Ras and sthayi bhav
| Ras | Sthayi bhav | How to recognise it |
|---|---|---|
| Shringar (शृंगार) (romantic) | Rati (रति) (love) | Love; has two forms — union (sanyog) and separation (viyog) |
| Hasya (हास्य) (comic) | Haas (हास) (mirth) | Laughter at odd appearance, speech or behaviour |
| Karun (करुण) (pathos) | Shok (शोक) (grief) | Grief over the loss of, or separation from, a loved one |
| Raudra (रौद्र) (fury) | Krodh (क्रोध) (anger) | Anger at insult or injustice |
| Veer (वीर) (heroic) | Utsah (उत्साह) (zeal) | Enthusiasm for battle, charity, compassion or duty |
| Bhayanak (भयानक) (terror) | Bhay (भय) (fear) | A frightening object or situation |
| Veebhats (वीभत्स) (disgust) | Jugupsa (जुगुप्सा) (revulsion) | Revulsion from a repugnant sight |
| Adbhut (अद्भुत) (wonder) | Vismay (विस्मय) (astonishment) | An astonishing object or event |
| Shant (शांत) (peace) | Nirved (निर्वेद) (detachment) | Detachment from the world |
| Vatsalya (वात्सल्य) (parental affection) | Vatsalata (वत्सलता) (love for one's child) | A parent's affection for their child |
| Bhakti (भक्ति) (devotion) | Bhagavad-vishayak rati (भगवद्विषयक रति) (devotion to God) | Devotion towards the divine |
Poetics originally recognised 9 ras; with vatsalya and bhakti added later, 11 ras are counted today.
Key alankar (figures of speech) with identification cues
| Alankar | How to spot it | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Anupras (अनुप्रास) (alliteration) | The same sound repeated again and again | खग-कुल कुल-कुल-सा बोल रहा; चारु चंद्र की चंचल किरणें (khag-kul kul-kul-sa bol raha; charu chandra ki chanchal kirnein) |
| Yamak | The same word repeated, but with a different meaning each time | कनक कनक ते सौ गुनी मादकता अधिकाय (kanak kanak te sau guni madakta adhikaay) (gold/dhatura plant) |
| Shlesh (श्लेष) (pun) | The word appears once, but carries multiple meanings | रहिमन पानी राखिए, बिन पानी सब सून (rahiman paani raakhiye, bin paani sab soon) (lustre, honour, water) |
| Upama (उपमा) (simile) | Similarity between upamey and upaman; comparison words like sa, si, sam, saris | पीपर पात सरिस मन डोला (peepar paat saris man dola) |
| Rupak (रूपक) (metaphor) | Upaman is attributed directly to upamey with no separation; often a hyphenated compound | सैन्य-सिंधु, चरण-कमल, मैया मैं तो चंद्र-खिलौना लैहों (sainya-sindhu, charan-kamal, maiya main to chandra-khilona laihon) |
| Utpreksha | Possibility of upaman is imagined in upamey; words like मानो, मनु, जनु, जानो (maano, manu, janu, jaano) | सोहत ओढ़े पीत पट, स्याम सलोने गात। मनहुँ नीलमनि सैल पर, आतप परयो प्रभात। (sohat odhe peet pat, syaam salone gaat. manahu neelmani sail par, aatap parayo prabhaat.) |
| Atishayokti (अतिशयोक्ति) (hyperbole) | Exaggerated description | हनुमान की पूँछ में लगन न पाई आग, लंका सिगरी जल गई (hanuman ki poonchh mein lagan na paayi aag, lanka sigri jal gayi) |
| Manaveekaran (मानवीकरण) (personification) | Human actions attributed to lifeless nature | मेघ आए बड़े बन-ठन के सँवर के (megh aaye bade ban-than ke sanvar ke) (clouds pictured as dressed-up guests) |
| Vakrokti (वक्रोक्ति) | An interpretation different from the speaker's intent (via shlesh or intonation) | reading a second meaning into an answer to a question |
Rupak and utpreksha get confused the most: if you see 'मानो/जनु' (maano/janu) it's utpreksha; if you see 'रूपी' (rupi) or a direct, unmarked identification (the army IS the ocean), it's rupak.
Kavya gun and language identification: quick revision
- Madhurya gun (sweetness)
- Soft sounds, few compounds, found in shringar/karun/shant ras — as in 'बीती विभावरी जाग री' (Beeti vibhavari jaag ri)
- Oj gun (vigour)
- Harsh sounds like t, th, d, conjunct consonants, long compounds; found in veer/raudra ras
- Prasad gun (clarity)
- Simple, easily-understood language whose meaning is clear the moment you hear it
- Identifying tatsam vocabulary
- Words carried over unchanged from Sanskrit — विभावरी, अंबर, नयनद्वय, उद्धार, दैन्य (vibhavari, ambar, nayandvay, uddhar, dainya); such language is called 'संस्कृतनिष्ठ' (Sanskritised / sanskritnishth)
- Sources of musicality (naad-saundarya)
- Repetition of sounds (anupras), matching rhyme, repetition of phrases, and rhythm
- Cue words for feeling
- 'धिक्' (dhik), 'हाय' (haay) = self-reproach/repentance; 'बढ़े चलो' (badhe chalo) = zeal; 'जाग री' (jaag ri) = a call to awaken
How to teach this in the classroom
Activity (Grades 3–5)
Sing a short rhyming children's poem with expression, then ask — 'कविता पढ़कर मन कैसा हुआ?' ("how did the poem make you feel?") and 'कौन-से शब्दों की ध्वनि मीठी लगी?' ("which words sounded the sweetest?") This builds a feel for bhav and musicality without any formal definitions.
Activity (Grades 6–8)
Write poem lines on cards and give them to groups; groups identify whether the line repeats a sound, makes a comparison, or uses a 'मानो' (maano)-type possibility. Then have them write one line of their own using the same alankar.
Teaching material
An audio or loud recitation of the poem, picture cards (dawn, birds, mountains), an alankar-identification chart, and a dictionary.
Common misconceptions
Not distinguishing rupak from upama; treating every repeated sound as yamak; taking a symbol literally (सैन्य-सिंधु / sainya-sindhu = an actual ocean). Clear these up by having students compare paired examples.
Assessment idea
Give an unfamiliar short poem and ask three questions: what is the central bhav, which line did you find most beautiful and why, and give the poem a title.
Memory trick / exam tip
When an alankar question comes up, check in this order: a comparison word (sa/si/sam) → upama; 'मानो/जनु' (maano/janu) → utpreksha; a hyphenated, unmarked identification (चरण-कमल / charan-kamal) → rupak; a repeated sound → anupras; the same word repeated with a different meaning → yamak; one word, multiple meanings → shlesh. For REET's 'inconsistent statement' questions, check the option with a negative word like 'अप्रभावी' (ineffective) or 'पलायन' (escapist) first — for well-known poems, that option is usually the odd one out.
Questions asked in REET 2024 (with solutions)
Question 61
Regarding the poem excerpt, the INCONSISTENT (incorrect) explanation is
- Aसंस्कृतनिष्ठ शब्दावली
- Bउदात्त राष्ट्रप्रेम
- Cअप्रभावी नाद सौंदर्य
- Dअनुप्रास अलंकार का प्रभावी प्रयोग
Explanation
Question 62
In 'सैन्य-सिंधु' (army-ocean), which figure of speech (अलंकार) is used?
- Aवक्रोक्ति अलंकार
- Bउत्प्रेक्षा अलंकार
- Cरूपक अलंकार
- Dश्लेष अलंकार
Explanation
जहाँ उपमेय पर उपमान का अभेद आरोप किया जाता है, वहाँ रूपक अलंकार होता है। ‘सैन्य-सिंधु’ में शत्रु की सेना (उपमेय) को ही समुद्र (उपमान) मान लिया गया है — सेना रूपी सिंधु, इसलिए यहाँ रूपक अलंकार है। उत्प्रेक्षा में ‘मानो, जनु’ जैसे संभावना-सूचक शब्द होते हैं।
Question 63
In the poem excerpt, the word that does NOT express a quality of the motherland's brave son is -
- Aशूर
- Bअमर्त्य
- Cप्रवीर
- Dभारती
Explanation
‘शूर’, ‘अमर्त्य’ और ‘प्रवीर’ शब्द मातृभूमि के सपूतों (वीरों) की विशेषता बताते हैं। ‘भारती’ शब्द भारत माता/भारतभूमि के लिए प्रयुक्त हुआ है, जो स्वतंत्रता की पुकार कर रही है, न कि सपूत की विशेषता। अतः उत्तर (D) है।
Question 64
In this poem, the poet has called for burning like what kind of fire, for the sake of freedom?
- Aजंगल की आग के समान
- Bईर्ष्या की आग के समान
- Cअंतरिक्ष की आग के समान
- Dसमुद्र की आग के समान
Explanation
पद्यांश में ‘अराति सैन्य-सिंधु में सुवाडवाग्नि से जलो’ कहा गया है। ‘वाडवाग्नि’ (बड़वानल) समुद्र के भीतर जलने वाली आग को कहते हैं। कवि शत्रु-सेना रूपी समुद्र में बड़वानल की तरह जलने का आह्वान करता है, इसलिए उत्तर ‘समुद्र की आग के समान’ है।
Question 65
The main life-value described in the poem excerpt is -
- Aप्रकृति प्रेम
- Bराष्ट्र प्रेम
- Cसंघर्षों से पलायन
- Dमानवीय सौहार्द
Explanation
पूरी कविता में स्वतंत्रता की पुकार, मातृभूमि के सपूतों को बढ़ते रहने और शत्रु से लड़ने का आह्वान है, इसलिए प्रमुख जीवन-मूल्य राष्ट्र प्रेम है। ‘संघर्षों से पलायन’ तो कविता के भाव के विपरीत है।
Question 61
The main message expressed in the poem excerpt is-
- Aपत्नी के प्रति समर्पित एकनिष्ठ प्रेम
- Bवसंत ऋतु की मादकता का चित्रण
- Cजागरण की प्रेरणा
- Dगोधूलि वेला का मनोरम वर्णन
Explanation
इस पद्यांश में कवि (जयशंकर प्रसाद) सखी को संबोधित करते हुए कहते हैं कि रात बीत गई है, उषा आ गई है, पक्षी बोल रहे हैं, इसलिए अब जाग जाओ। ‘बीती विभावरी जाग री’ पंक्ति से स्पष्ट है कि मुख्य संदेश जागरण की प्रेरणा है।
Question 62
The reason for the effective musicality (नाद-सौंदर्य) in the poem excerpt is-
- Aद्वित्व व्यंजन प्रधान शब्द
- Bओजगुण का प्रभाव
- Cमूर्धन्य वर्णों की आवृत्ति
- Dसमान तुक वाले शब्दों का बाहुल्य
Explanation
पद्यांश में ‘नागरी-गागरी’, ‘बोल रहा-डोल रहा’, ‘पिए-किए’, ‘जाग री-विहाग री’ जैसे समान तुक वाले शब्दों का बाहुल्य है, जिससे लय और नाद-सौंदर्य उत्पन्न होता है। इसमें ओज गुण नहीं बल्कि माधुर्य गुण है, और द्वित्व व्यंजन या मूर्धन्य वर्णों की विशेष आवृत्ति नहीं है।
Question 63
From the viewpoint of emotional beauty (bhav-saundarya), the unsuitable option is-
- Aप्रकृति के सौंदर्य का चित्रण
- Bप्रेयसी की मादकता का चित्रण
- Cउषा के आगमन का चित्रण
- Dमध्य रात्रि में गाये जाने वाले गीत का चित्रण
Explanation
Question 64
In the line “खग-कुल कुल-कुल-सा बोल रहा।” (the bird-flock is chirping 'kul-kul'-like), the figure of speech (alankar) among the following is-
- Aश्लेष
- Bवक्रोक्ति
- Cअनुप्रास
- Dरूपक
Explanation
Question 65
The appropriate statement regarding the language used in the poem excerpt is-
- Aतद्भव एवं देशज शब्द प्रधान भाषा
- Bआमबोल चाल युक्त सामासिक पदावली
- Cविदेशी शब्द प्रधान भाषा
- Dतत्सम शब्दावली युक्त भाषा
Explanation
पद्यांश में विभावरी, अंबर, उषा, खग-कुल, किसलय, लतिका, मधु-मुकुल, मलयज जैसे संस्कृत के तत्सम शब्दों का प्रयोग हुआ है। अतः इसकी भाषा तत्सम शब्दावली युक्त है; इसमें विदेशी या देशज शब्दों की प्रधानता नहीं है।
Question 76
Among the following, what pierced the veil of illusion (mayavaran)?
- Aराम के तीर ने
- Bराम के आँसू ने
- Cराम के विनय ने
- Dराम के मन ने
Explanation
पद्यांश की अंतिम पंक्तियों में कहा गया है कि राम का एक मन जो नहीं थका, जो दैन्य और विनय नहीं जानता, ‘कर गया भेद वह मायावरण प्राप्त कर जय’। अर्थात मायावरण का भेद राम के मन ने किया। ‘विनय’ को तो वह मन जानता ही नहीं था।
Question 77
In the line 'जानकी ! हाय उद्धार प्रिया का हो न सका' (Janaki! Alas, the beloved could not be rescued), the sentiment (bhaav) expressed is
- Aघृणा का
- Bभय का
- Cपश्चात्ताप का
- Dक्रोध का
Explanation
‘जानकी! हाय उद्धार प्रिया का हो न सका’ में राम अपनी असफलता पर दुःखी होकर सोचते हैं कि वे प्रिया सीता का उद्धार नहीं कर सके। इसके ठीक पहले ‘धिक् जीवन’, ‘धिक् साधन’ जैसे आत्म-धिक्कार वाले शब्द हैं, इसलिए यहाँ पश्चात्ताप का भाव है; घृणा, भय या क्रोध का नहीं।
Question 78
Based on the poem excerpt, select the inconsistent (incorrect) statement
- Aध्यानमग्न राम दो चरण देख रहे हैं ।
- Bराम का चंचल मन स्थिर हो गया ।
- Cराम के दोनों नेत्र अश्रुपूर्ण हो गये ।
- Dराम की चेतना के भीतर एक ओर अचेतन मन था जो अभी तक निराश नहीं हुआ था ।
Explanation
पद्यांश में ‘हुआ सहसा स्थिर मन चंचल’ का अर्थ है— जो मन स्थिर था, वह सहसा चंचल हो गया (हाथ में नीलकमल न मिलने पर)। इसलिए ‘राम का चंचल मन स्थिर हो गया’ कथन उलटा और असंगत है। ध्यान में चरण-युगल देखना, नेत्रों का भर आना और न थकने वाला एक मन— ये बातें पद्यांश में हैं।
Question 79
The characteristic of the language used in the poem excerpt is
- Aतद्भव शब्दों का बाहुल्य
- Bतत्सम शब्दों का प्रयोग
- Cआम बोलचाल की भाषा
- Dदीर्घ सामासिक भाषा
Explanation
पद्यांश में नीलकमल, विमल, असिद्धि, नयनद्वय, उद्धार, दैन्य, मायावरण जैसे संस्कृतनिष्ठ (तत्सम) शब्दों का प्रयोग हुआ है। यह आम बोलचाल या तद्भव-प्रधान भाषा नहीं है। अतः भाषा की विशेषता तत्सम शब्दों का प्रयोग है।
Question 80
Which form of Ram emerges in the poem excerpt (पद्यांश)?
- Aमानव
- Bईश्वर
- Cदानव
- Dमायावी
Explanation
पद्यांश में राम साधना में असफल होने पर रोते हैं, अपने जीवन को धिक्कारते हैं और प्रिया के उद्धार न कर पाने पर दुःखी होते हैं। ये सब मानवीय भावनाएँ हैं, इसलिए यहाँ राम का मानव रूप उभरकर आया है, ईश्वर या मायावी रूप नहीं।
Practice questions
Question 1
Where words like 'मानो', 'जनु' or 'मनहुँ' express the possibility of the upman (object of comparison) in the upmey (subject being compared), the alankar (figure of speech) present is —
- Aउत्प्रेक्षा
- Bरूपक
- Cउपमा
- Dश्लेष
Explanation
When words like 'मानो, जनु, मनहुँ' (maano, janu, manahu) express the mere possibility of the upaman in the upamey, that's utpreksha, and these are its trademark words. Upama, by contrast, uses similarity-markers like sa, si, sam.
Question 2
In 'चरण-कमल बंदौं हरि राई', the alankar is —
- Aउपमा
- Bयमक
- Cअनुप्रास
- Dरूपक
Explanation
Here the feet (upamey) are directly identified as the lotus (upaman), with no comparison word at all — this direct, unmarked identification is rupak.
Question 3
The sthayi bhav (dominant emotion) of Veer ras (heroic sentiment) is —
- Aक्रोध
- Bउत्साह
- Cविस्मय
- Dनिर्वेद
Explanation
The sthayi bhav of veer ras (वीर रस) is utsah (उत्साह, zeal). Krodh belongs to raudra ras, vismay to adbhut ras, and nirved to shant ras.
Question 4
In 'कनक कनक ते सौ गुनी मादकता अधिकाय', the word 'कनक' occurs twice with different meanings (gold, and thorn-apple). The alankar here is —
- Aयमक
- Bश्लेष
- Cअनुप्रास
- Dउपमा
Explanation
When the same word appears repeatedly but carries a different meaning each time, that's yamak alankar. In shlesh, the word appears only once but yields multiple meanings.
Question 5
In shringar (romantic) or karun (pathos) ras poetry marked by soft sounds, few compound words and a sweet rhythm, which kavya-gun (poetic quality) is usually present?
- Aओज
- Bप्रसाद
- Cकोई नहीं
- Dमाधुर्य
Explanation
Madhurya gun features soft sounds, short compounds and a sweet rhythm, and typically appears in shringar, karun and shant ras. Oj gun, by contrast, uses harsh sounds and long compounds.
Question 6
In a poem, a line like 'धिक् जीवन जो पाता ही आया विरोध' mainly expresses which emotion?
- Aआत्मग्लानि
- Bउल्लास
- Cवात्सल्य
- Dविस्मय
Explanation
'Dhik' is a word of self-reproach; reproaching one's own life is a sign of self-reproach (and repentance). There's no signal here of joy, parental affection or wonder.
Question 7
The correct statement about the language of a poem containing words like 'विभावरी, अंबर, किसलय, मलयज' is —
- Aदेशज शब्द प्रधान
- Bतत्सम शब्द प्रधान
- Cविदेशी शब्द प्रधान
- Dतद्भव शब्द प्रधान
Explanation
These are all words carried over from Sanskrit in their original form, which makes them tatsam — so such language is called tatsam-dominant (Sanskritised).
Question 8
The intent of a line like 'सैन्य-सिंधु में वाडवाग्नि-सा जलो' is —
- Aसमुद्र में वास्तव में आग लगाओ
- Bसेना को समुद्र पार ले जाओ
- Cशत्रु-सेना के बीच समुद्र की आग की तरह प्रचंड होकर लड़ो
- Dयुद्ध से दूर रहो
Explanation
Sainya-sindhu (सैन्य-सिंधु) is a rupak — the enemy army is pictured as an ocean, and vaadvagni is the fire believed to blaze within the sea. So the line's intent is to fight with the same blazing intensity against the enemy army.
Question 9
Class 7 children get confused between Rupak (metaphor) and Upama (simile). The most effective measure for the teacher is —
- Aदोनों की परिभाषाएँ दस बार लिखवाना
- Bकेवल परीक्षा से पहले अलंकार पढ़ाना
- Cएक ही वस्तु पर दोनों तरह के वाक्य (‘मुख चंद्र-सा है’, ‘मुख-चंद्र’) की तुलना करवाकर अंतर खोजने देना
- Dअलंकार पढ़ाना छोड़ देना
Explanation
Comparing two forms of the same idea side by side ('the face is like the moon' vs 'moon-face') lets children discover for themselves that upama uses a word like 'sa' while rupak makes a direct identification. This is active, induction-based learning.
Question 10
When setting questions on an unseen poem, which question will best assess comprehension of the emotion (bhav-bodh)?
- Aकवि का जन्म वर्ष लिखो
- Bकविता का मुख्य भाव अपने शब्दों में लिखो और एक उपयुक्त शीर्षक दो
- Cकविता की पहली पंक्ति याद करके लिखो
- Dकविता में कितने शब्द हैं
Explanation
Writing the central bhav in one's own words and giving the poem a title shows real depth of comprehension. The poet's birth year, a memorised first line, or a word count don't assess comprehension of feeling at all.
Frequently asked questions
How many REET questions come from unseen poems?+
The number varies by shift. REET 2024 asked a combined 15 questions across three poem extracts, making this one of the most important parts of the Hindi language section.
What's the difference between rupak and utpreksha alankar?+
In rupak, the upamey is directly identified as the upaman (सैन्य-सिंधु (sainya-sindhu) — the army IS the ocean). In utpreksha, the possibility of the upaman is imagined in the upamey, and words like 'मानो, मनु, जनु' (maano, manu, janu) appear.
How do you recognise that a poem's language is 'tatsam-heavy'?+
If words carried over unchanged from Sanskrit — विभावरी, अंबर, नयन, उद्धार, दैन्य (vibhavari, ambar, nayan, uddhar, dainya) — are common, and everyday tadbhav words (आँख, रात, आग / aankh, raat, aag) are rare, the language is tatsam-heavy or Sanskritised.
Who wrote 'हिमाद्रि तुंग शृंग से' (Himadri tung shring se)?+
This is a composition by Jaishankar Prasad, from his play 'चंद्रगुप्त' (Chandragupt). It carries a call to patriotism and to keep moving forward for freedom.
