Unseen Passage: A Method for Solving It, Question Types, and Rajasthani Literature — REET Notes
This page brings together a method for solving an unseen passage accurately and quickly, how to recognise every type of question that comes with it, and the facts about Rajasthani language and literature that REET 2024 paired with the passage. Both Language I and II give direct marks for the passage, making this the most dependable scoring section of the Hindi paper.

How REET tests this topic
REET 2024 asked 10 questions tied to this topic. 3 questions were on the meanings of words from the passage — 'बेघर' / beghar (built from the prefix 'बे' / "be-"), 'क्लांति' / klaanti (fatigue), and the Rajasthani word 'सगळै' / sagalai (everywhere). One question asked the meaning of the Rajasthani proverb word 'अणूतो' / anooto (excess/too much). The remaining 6 questions stepped outside the passage itself into Rajasthani literature — asking for the authors of 'वचनिका अचलदास खीची री' (Vachanika Achaldas Khichi Ri), 'वीर सतसई' (Veer Satsai), 'तास रौ घर' (Taas Rau Ghar), 'अलेखूं हिटलर' (Alekhu Hitler), 'सैनाणी' (Sainani) and 'चेतावनी रा चूंगट्या' (Chetavani Ra Chungatya). In other words, both the ability to work out meaning from context and basic knowledge of Rajasthani language and literature are tested here.
What is an unseen passage, and what does REET actually test with it?
An unseen (apathit) passage is a piece of prose from outside the textbook that the candidate has not read before. Its questions don't test memorised knowledge — they test reading comprehension: grasping the main idea, working out a word's meaning from context, telling fact apart from conclusion, and recognising grammatical forms in the text.
REET passages are usually on themes like education, environment, labour, human civilisation, moral values, or Rajasthan's culture. The questions themselves tend to be straightforward, but the options are built so that a hurried reader picks a 'आधा सही' ("half-right") answer. So always answer based on the passage itself, never on your own opinion or general knowledge.
A 6-step method for solving the passage
| Step | What to do | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1. First read | Read the whole passage once, quickly, without stopping | To grasp the topic and the writer's point of view |
| 2. Read the questions | Look at all the questions and options | So you know exactly what to look for in the passage |
| 3. Second read | Read carefully; mark key sentences, numbers, names and difficult words | So you can find the relevant lines fast |
| 4. Locate the answer | Go back to the exact line for each question | So you're not relying on memory alone |
| 5. Eliminate options | Remove options that go beyond the passage, are too broad, or reverse the meaning | Guards against 'आधे सही' ("half-right") traps |
| 6. Save the title / central idea for last | Do the title question only after all the others | By then the full meaning of the passage is already clear |
Saving the title and central-idea question for last both saves time and improves accuracy.
Question types and how to solve them
| Type of question | How to recognise it | Trick to solve it |
|---|---|---|
| Title | 'उपयुक्त शीर्षक है' ("the most suitable title is") | Short, and covering the whole passage; a title tied to just one paragraph, or one that's far too broad, is wrong |
| Central idea / main message | 'मुख्य संदेश' ("main message"), 'प्रमुख विचार' ("central idea") | Usually in the first or last sentence; ask what the whole passage is proving |
| Factual question | 'गद्यांश के अनुसार…' ("according to the passage…") | The answer is stated directly in the passage; find the line and match it |
| Inconsistent / false statement | 'असंगत है' ("is inconsistent"), 'नहीं है' ("is not") | Match every option against the passage; whichever is absent or reversed is the answer |
| Word meaning | 'शब्द का अर्थ है' ("the meaning of the word is") | Read the sentence carrying the word in context; break apart prefixes and suffixes (be+ghar = without a house) |
| Synonym/antonym | 'समानार्थी' ("synonymous"), 'विपरीतार्थक' ("opposite in meaning") | Think of the word's tatsam form; for antonyms, swap the prefix (aadar–anaadar) |
| Grammar-based question | sandhi, samas, prefix, suffix, word class | Isolate the word from the passage and apply the rule; let meaning help you |
Word-meaning questions: use context and word-formation
Word-meaning questions are the fastest to solve, as long as the word is read within its sentence. In a phrase like 'क्लांति रहित परिश्रम' (klaanti rahit parishram), the word 'रहित' (rahit) tells you klaanti is something that gets in the way of effort — in other words, fatigue. Similarly, 'बे-' (be-) in 'बेघर' (beghar) is a prefix meaning "without", the same as in be-imaan or be-chain.
Some useful prefixes: a/an (absence — agyaan, anaadar), nir/nis (without — nirdhan, nishchal), su (good — sugam), dur/dus (bad/difficult — durgam, dushkar), naa (not — naapasand), be (without — beghar). Some useful suffixes: -ta, -tva (an abstract quality — maanavta, manushyatva), -eey (relating to — raashtreey), -ik (social). Recognising a prefix or suffix instantly rules out half the options.
REET's passages also bring in Rajasthani proverbs and words. In 'करम री सगळै बाजै' (karam ri sagalai baajai), 'सगळै' (sagalai) means everywhere, and in 'अणूतो धन सुख-सान्ति ने खोस लेवे' (anooto dhan sukh-shaanti ne khos leve), 'अणूतो' (anooto) means excess — that is, excess wealth takes away peace and happiness. Even with such words, work out the meaning of the whole proverb before choosing an answer.

| तास रौ घर (Taas Rau Ghar) (a play) | Yadvendra Sharma 'Chandra' | A Rajasthani play; asked in REET 2024 |
'चेतावनी रा चूंगट्या' / 'Chetavani Ra Chungatya' (Kesari Singh Barhath) and 'पाथल अर पीथल' / 'Pathal Ar Peethal' (Kanhaiyalal Sethia) are both tied to Mewar's Maharanas — so don't mix up their authors in the exam.
How to teach this in the classroom
Activity (Grades 3–5)
Have every child write a title for a short passage; then discuss which title applies to the whole passage and which fits only one sentence.
Activity (Grades 6–8)
Give groups a passage and have them write factual, inference-based and word-meaning questions of all three types, then swap and solve each other's questions. Bringing in a Rajasthani proverb from home and explaining its Hindi meaning builds a bridge between the mother tongue and standard Hindi.
Teaching material
Short passages from children's magazines and newspapers, a dictionary, a prefix-suffix chart, and a class list of local proverbs.
Common misconceptions
Children answer from their own opinion or general knowledge, and give up reading when they hit a difficult word. Keep asking 'गद्यांश में यह कहाँ लिखा है?' ("where does the passage say this?"), and encourage guessing meaning from context before reaching for a dictionary.
Assessment idea
Give an unfamiliar passage with five questions — one title, one central idea, two factual, and one word-meaning — and have students underline the exact line their answer came from.
Memory trick / exam tip
Don't go 'पहले प्रश्न, फिर गद्यांश' ("questions first, then the passage") — go 'पहले एक तेज़़ पठन, फिर प्रश्न, फिर ध्यान से पठन' ("one quick read, then the questions, then a careful re-read"). And in an "inconsistent" question, the option that simply isn't stated anywhere in the passage is inherently suspicious — check it first.

Practice questions
Question 1
Questions on an unseen prose passage mainly assess which ability?
- Aरटने की क्षमता
- Bसुलेख की क्षमता
- Cपठन-बोध की क्षमता
- Dउच्चारण की क्षमता
Explanation

- Aअच्छा
- Bसहित
- Cरहित
- Dअधिक
Explanation
The prefix "nir" carries the meaning "without/free of", so nirdhan = free of dhan (wealth). "Su" means good and "sa" means "with".
Question 3
The most important criterion when choosing a suitable title for a passage is —
- Aशीर्षक पूरे गद्यांश के मुख्य विचार को समेटे
- Bशीर्षक गद्यांश के केवल पहले वाक्य से लिया गया हो
- Cशीर्षक लंबा और विस्तृत हो
- Dशीर्षक में कठिन तत्सम शब्द हों
Explanation
A good title is concise and captures the central idea of the entire passage. A title based only on the first sentence or a single portion is incomplete.
Question 4
The antonym of the word 'क्लांति' is —
- Aथकान
- Bस्फूर्ति
- Cश्रम
- Dक्लेश
Explanation
"Klaanti" means fatigue, so its opposite is "sphoorti" (freshness/vigour). "Thakaan" is a synonym, while "shram" and "klesh" don't give an opposite meaning.

- Bसूर्यमल्ल मीसण
- Cकेसरीसिंह बारहठ

Question 8
In a passage-based question asking for the 'inconsistent statement', which option should first be regarded as suspect?
- Aजो गद्यांश में शब्दशः लिखा हो
- Bजो गद्यांश की किसी बात के उलट हो या उसमें लिखा ही न हो
- Cजो सबसे छोटा हो
- Dजो सबसे अंत में दिया गया हो
Explanation
An inconsistent statement is one that doesn't match the passage — either it contradicts something the passage says, or it isn't mentioned at all. Neither the length of an option nor its position decides the answer.
Question 9
A Class 5 teacher wants children to try to understand the meaning of difficult words themselves before consulting a dictionary. The most suitable activity for this is —
- Aआसपास के वाक्यों के संदर्भ से अर्थ का अनुमान लगवाना
- Bशब्दों की सूची रटवाना
- Cहर शब्द का अर्थ श्यामपट पर लिख देना
- Dशब्दों को पाँच-पाँच बार लिखवाना
Explanation
Guessing meaning from the surrounding sentences builds independent reading comprehension. Rote memorisation or simply supplying the meaning outright leaves children passive.
Question 10
From the point of view of solving an unseen passage, which order is most suitable?
- Aशीर्षक वाला प्रश्न सबसे पहले, फिर गद्यांश पढ़ना
- Bगद्यांश का केवल अंतिम अनुच्छेद पढ़ना
- Cकेवल प्रश्न पढ़कर अनुमान से उत्तर देना
- Dगद्यांश का तेज़ पठन → प्रश्न पढ़ना → ध्यान से पुनः पठन → शीर्षक अंत में
Explanation
A quick first read builds understanding of the topic, then reading the questions and re-reading carefully surfaces the answer locations. Doing the title question last keeps the full meaning of the passage in view.
Frequently asked questions
How many REET questions come from the unseen passage?+
The number varies by shift. REET 2024 asked questions on the passage and its related word meanings in Language I/II (30-30 questions each), and paired it with Rajasthani literature questions too — a combined 10 questions tied to this page.
How do you choose the title for an unseen passage?+
The title should be short, engaging, and capture the passage's central idea. A title based on just one paragraph or example, or one that's far too broad for the topic, is not correct.
Should you use general knowledge for passage questions?+
No. Only the answer that's proven by the passage is correct. An option can sometimes be generally true and still be wrong because it isn't stated in the passage.
Why did REET 2024's passage section include Rajasthani literature?+
REET 2024's language paper included questions on Rajasthani language and literature alongside the passage — such as the authors of Veer Satsai, Sainani and Chetavani Ra Chungatya. So it pays to remember the major Rajasthani works and their writers.
